    A collection of photographs of old shop fronts in Coventry, donated by the public, will form part of an exhibition for the Shop Front Festival, external in the city.

    You've Got Some Front is part of the Precinct Shopping exhibition, celebrating shopping in Coventry during the city's post-war years.

    Listeners to the Vic Minett programme donated the photographs.

    The Shop Front Festival is the first major arts festival in the city since winning City of Culture 2021 status.

    The exhibition opens at City Arcadia today and runs for two weeks.

    The New Saints of Oswestry are in home league action tonight against second-placed Bala Town and could virtually secure the league title with a win.

    A win would put TNS 15 points clear of their rivals, with five games to go.

    The New Saints go into the game with a goal difference of 40, while Bala have a goal difference of 0, so even if they lost their remaining games and Bala won all theirs, TNS would be hard to catch.

    Officers investigating an armed robbery, in which cash was stolen from premises in Exhall, Warwickshire, have released CCTV images, external of a man they'd like to speak to.

    Three masked men threatened staff members with what's reported to have been a handgun during the incident on 22 February.

    Staff were forced to open and empty cash from the safe, before the men made off.

    Warwickshire Police believe the man pictured may have been in the area shortly before the incident.

  4. Canal drained of millions of litres of waterpublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2018

    It's estimated 17 million litres of water has drained from a canal in Cheshire, after a huge hole appeared in the embankment overnight.

    The collapse has happened on the Shropshire Union Canal in Middlewich and up to 20 narrowboats have been affected.

    Many people have abandoned their boats, but those who live in them face a long wait to get back on the water.

  5. Thousands expected for Midlands Grand Nationalpublished at 16:23 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2018

    Thousands of people are expected to be at Uttoxeter Racecourse for the Midlands Grand National this weekend.

    Last year, the annual meeting attracted more than 16,000 people, generating an estimated £1m for businesses in the area.

    Clerk of the Course Charlie Moore said it was a challenge to "operate the place absolutely packed" but it was great for the racecourse to have the national exposure.

    A flatpack 3D printer, a molecule separator and a communication device that could help evacuate buildings have been named as the winning ideas at an annual science festival in Birmingham.

    Over 500 young people from the across the country were selected to show their ideas at the Big Bang Fair, where 10 were shortlisted to pitch Dragon's Den-style to a panel of judges.

    The PlyBot - a £50 3D printer - won Josh Mitchell (pictured left) the title of UK Young Engineer of the Year.

    Young Scientist of the Year 2018 was awarded to Emily Xu - for her project that creates new ways of separating mirror image molecules.

    And Baran Korkmas was named Junior Engineering winner for his project inspired by the Grenfell Tower tragegy - the iMAREC: Mobile Emergency Application.

    These photos show the section of the Shropshire Union Canal which has collapsed.

    It's affecting part of the canal which leads to an aqueduct over the river near Nantwich Road in Middlewich, Cheshire.

    The canal and towpath have been closed for repair work and to allow the cause of the breach to be investigated.

    Three illegal firearms have been recovered after officers raided addresses in Birmingham, police say.

    According to the West Midlands force, a pistol and loaded magazine were found today at a house in Bellevue, Edgbaston, and a 35-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of storing the firearm.

    Police said a sawn-off shotgun and cartridges were uncovered during a search on Thursday of an unrelated address in Hillmeads Road, Kings Norton, where a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and ammunition.

    A third gun was seized by officers called to Colebrook Road, Shirley, today by a taxi driver who reported being threatened by a passenger who ran off without paying.

    A 28-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing an illegal firearm and non-payment.

    Coventry Rugby Club could win their first promotion in 22 years tomorrow if they get a bonus point win over Caldy.

    It would mean they couldn't be caught at the top of National League One and would go up to the Championship next season.

    A coach driver who had to be cut free from from his vehicle after a crash involving a lorry this morning suffered suspected leg and pelvic injuries, the ambulance service said, external.

    The man, in his 30s, was airlifted to hospital after fire crews managed to pull him free from the crash on the A38 near Barton-under-Needwood.

    The driver of a car, thought to be in his 50s, managed to get himself out and was treated for a chest injury.

    Herefordshire Council caused "dreadful failures" in the handling of children in its care, according to a High Court judge.

    Mr Justice Keehan named the authority, saying the public had a "legitimate interest" in knowing what authorities do.

    He said bosses had been too slow to ask family court judges to take control of cases and make long-term decisions about children's living arrangements.

    The council said it was "remedying past mistakes".

    Herefordshire Council's lawyers had argued the authority should never have been named in the judge's ruling.

    A 10-storey student tower block is to be built on a car park in Digbeth despite concerns from planning chiefs as to whether it is actually needed.

    The development will provide 399 apartments, a gym and four retail units at the corner of Upper Dean Street and Pershore Road.

    Birmingham City Council’s planning committee passed Bricks Developments’ application on Thursday by 10 votes to two.

    But some members of the committee questioned whether the block was necessary.

    Councillor Fiona Williams said: “One reservation I have is that we are getting more student accommodation when it is too expensive for students."

    What appears to be a gun has been found at the bottom of a canal in Cheshire after water drained following the collapse of an embankment overnight.

    A section of the Shropshire Union Canal's given way, causing water to drain into the River Wheelock.

    Cheshire Police says the firearm was spotted lying on the bottom this afternoon and handed to them.

    They say they haven't yet been able to work out if it's real or fake as it's "rusty and silted up".

    Worcester City Supporters Trust has challenged the board of directors to allow an independent review of the football club's finances.

    There have been long-running concerns about the finances of the club, and the trust is offering a financial consultant from the Supporters Direct organisation who would carry out a review free of charge.

    The trust says it is making the request "due to the increasing concern around the future of Worcester City FC".

    It says any refusal of the offer by the directors would be taken as an unwillingness by the board to work in an open and transparent manner.

    The music of Claude Debussy will be heard all over the city this weekend, as Birmingham celebrates the composer.

    As well as Jams on the Tram - an upright piano which has been placed on a metro tram - a grand piano is to be placed at New Street Station for pianists to play and enjoy the music.

    A woman from Redditch has been celebrating her 110th birthday.

    Hilda Clulow was born five years after the Wright Brothers flew the first ever plane, and four years before World War One started.

    Her family says she claims spam fritters and a glass of sherry could be the secret to a long life.

    Five people have been treated by paramedics for the effects of smoke inhalation, after a house fire in Sandbach

    Fire crews were called to Ordsall Close after 21:00 yesterday, and say the victims had managed to escape.
