  1. Narrowboats left leaning after canal collapsepublished at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2018

    Chris King
    Reporter, BBC Radio Stoke

A narrowboat owner says he's currently living at 30 degrees after a canal embankment collapsed in Cheshire, draining the water.

A massive hole appeared at the edge of the Shropshire Union in Middlewich at the end of last week causing a stretch of the canal to empty.

Up to 20 boats are believed to have been left stranded after the collapse, including that of Richard Kill, who was visiting the area.

I was laying in bed when I noticed the boat was starting to lean over. We found a huge hole in the embankment about half a mile away. Within half an hour it had drained 3/4 mile of canal leaving half a dozen boats leaning and at some alarming angles. The boat is still on the pound until the Canals and River Trust puts in a temporary dam to pump water from the Trent and Mersey canal so we can float and get through the lock and be on our way."
