    Temperatures of up to 24C are expected over the next few days, matching those Nairobi and Athens.

    The mini heatwave prompted West Midlands Fire Service to ask what was the "warm yellowy ball of light" seen in the sky this morning.

    A woman who suffered a brain injury seven years ago was asked to leave a JD Wetherspoons pub after staff mistook her disability for drunkenness.

    Grace Currie was escorted out of The Shrewsbury Hotel by door staff on Saturday night who told her she was too drunk, despite having only one drink.

    A Birmingham hospital is taking delivery of a revolutionary piece of equipment today which could dramatically increase the number of heart transplants it carries out.

    The Heart in a Box allows a heart to stay alive outside the body, increasing the amount of time surgeons have to operate.

    Free French leader Charles de Gaulle is believed to have regularly visited cadets and officers based at Ribbesford House in Bewdley, Worcestershire.

    Estate agents Andrew Grant said the property, which had "an amazing heritage", was in need of complete renovation.

    It was given a guide price of £500,000 at the auction at the Crown and Sandys pub, Ombersley, yesterday.

    Cheshire East Council's spending £7m changing the layout of the Crewe Green Roundabout and says the alterations will improve traffic flow in the future.

    Last night, the council shut the exit from the junction on to Hungerford Road and Sydney Road and it'll be closed for the next three months.

    This morning, I've been in Crewe and traffic's been horrendous with long queues in the areas around the roundabout.

    A woman was rescued from a house fire in Ludlow last night.

    It broke out in the kitchen of a house on Lower Broad Street at about 21:10.

    The fire service says the woman was assisted from the building before crews arrived.

    The fire was caused by unattended cooking.

    The drinks firm revealed yesterday it is going to revamp its base in Ross-on-Wye at a cost of £4.5m.

    A listed building in Hanley is set to become a restaurant after lying empty for more than a decade.

    The Grade II listed Bethesda Building on Albion Street, built in the 19th Century, is currently being renovated and the City Council has now granted a premises licence.

    The building which started life as the offices of Staffordshire Potteries Water Board could open as a restaurant within the next year to 18 months.

  15. Health inspectors 'forced to intervene' on sepsis patientpublished at 08:37 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    Health inspectors were forced to intervene to help a patient with suspected sepsis, external at a hospital which was ordered to improve, a report has revealed.

    Staff in the emergency department of Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, West Midlands, failed to properly monitor and treat the patient after they were admitted, according to a Care Quality Commission (CQC) report.

    The CQC report said in one case, the inspection team "had to intervene to ensure a patient was reviewed and attended to as a matter of urgency".

    "This patient in particular was admitted early in the morning and placed on the sepsis pathway, but did not receive antibiotics until two hours later and did not receive timely observations," the report said.

    "The trust are currently undertaking a serious incident review into this case."

    The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which operates the hospital, was given an overall rating of "requires improvement".

    The trust says it's put an improvement plan in place for the emergency department to ensure patient safety.

  17. Hammerson withdraws 'recommended' Intu bidpublished at 08:16 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    Hammerson, the owner of Birmingham's Bullring and Grand Central shopping centres, has said it is no longer recommending shareholders vote in favour of its acquisition of Intu, just months after announcing an offer for the firm.

    Intu owns the Merry Hill and Potteries shopping centres, among others.

    In a statement, Hammerson said the move was "no longer in the best interests of shareholders" and that the stock market's view of the UK retail property market had "deteriorated" since the start of the year.

    Work to repair the ageing Coventry ring road will overrun by several months.

    About £6m is being spent to improve the section between Foleshill Road and London Road.

    It's the first major structural work undertaken on the ring road since it was built more than 40 years ago.

    Resurfacing work and other improvements are taking place since it fell into disrepair.

    Work was meant to finish last month, but will now run until the summer.
