    Performances from Hay Festival are to be streamed live into schools across the UK for the first time next month.

    The 12 free sessions include, external comedian Julian Clary and CBBC Book Club presenter Katie Thistleton, as well as author Cressida Cowell.

    The project follows a trial in Wales last year which reached more than 7,000 students in almost 200 schools.

    Cheshire's chief constable Simon Byrne has failed in his bid to get a string of bullying allegations against him dismissed.

    His lawyers had claimed at a misconduct hearing that the inquiry - by Cheshire's police commissioner - was unfair.

    But proceedings are set to continue amid police officers' accusations that Mr Byrne had bullied and humiliated them.

    He denies the claims.

    She was attacked when she stopped to exchange details with the male driver of a grey Nissan Micra after the crash - close to the M6 junction in Bedworth.

    The woman, in her 20s, sustained head and hip injuries in the incident which happened at 14:15 on 9 April.

    West Midlands Police is to spend money taken from the proceeds of crime to buy three drones to help its criminal investigations.

    The flying devices are fitted with high definition cameras and thermal imaging technology.

    Seven drone "pilots" are also being trained within the force.

    The RSPCA has revealed it investigated more than 6,000 complaints of animal cruelty in the West Midlands last year.

    The charity recieved 17 new complaints every day in the region in 2017.

    Notable cases included a dog tied up in bin bag and left to die at the side of a road, and a Yorkshire terrier with matted fur and weighing 2kg (4.4lbs).

    The funeral of the five-time darts world champion Eric Bristow takes place in Stoke-on-Trent today.

    The 60-year-old, who was known as the Crafty Cockney, moved from London to Leek in Staffordshire in 1979.

    He died earlier this month after suffering a heart attack.

    Guests at his funeral have been asked to wear darts shirts in celebration of his life.

    A Labour activist chosen by the party to fight the next general election is facing calls to stand down after making a string of controversial comments.

    Mandy Richards, chosen last month to fight the Worcester seat, cast doubt on the evidence for the Manchester bombing and the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox.

    She also claimed the security services had her under surveillance and were opening her mail because of her views.

    She has insisted she is defending her rights and is not a "fantasist".

    A Salvation Army group in Staffordshire has set up a community cafe using food due to be thrown away by a local supermarket.

    The team in Kidsgrove in Staffordshire has been working with its local Tesco store to collect donated produce.

    It's cooked and served as a three-course meal for local people every week..

  9. Charity hopes to train HS2 minds on woodlandpublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    The Woodland Trust is to give evidence to the government's HS2 select committee today, calling for an ancient woodland in Staffordshire to be protected.

    The conservation charity says six tunnels, planned for the high speed rail route at Whitmore Wood, would destroy almost seven hectares of irreplaceable habitat.

    Instead it proposes a continuous 6km underground tunnel which it says would reduce the destruction to the woodland by 60%.

    The funeral takes place today of an eight-year-old girl found stabbed at her father's home in Walsall in January.

    Mylee Billingham died in hospital after suffering a knife wound to the chest.

    William Billingham, 54, of Valley View, Brownhills, is charged with her murder and threats to kill her mother.

    The Library of Birmingham is set to fully re-open today after being closed following the discovery of a cracked pane in the atrium.

    The five-year-old building, which cost £189m to build, shut on Friday when the damage was found by workers.

    Its managers have apologised for the inconvenience and say the glass has been deemed safe.
