    Properties in a Coventry street have been evacuated as a bomb disposal team carries out an investigation.

    A cordon has been set up on Brookside Avenue at the junction with Rubens Close.

    People in about eight properties have been asked to leave.

    The army was called to a home at the site following a police search of the property. West Midlands Police said officers found "suspicious items" and a man, 20, was detained under the Explosives Act.

    Tomorrow would've been the so-called Crafty Cockney's 61st birthday, but this afternoon, his friends and family will mark the passing of the five-time world champion.

    Officers investigating an alleged prostitution ring have arrested another man on suspicion of modern slavery offences.

    A 58-year-old man was arrested at a house in Burton this morning on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic with a view to exploitation.

    Last week, enforcement officers raided properties on Uttoxeter New Road and Violet Street in Derby and Station Court in Burton. Five women were rescued and two men were arrested. Two men were later charged and remanded in custody.

    Work has started to treat sandstone cladding on the Frankwell flood defences in Shrewsbury.

    A woman left her elderly and injured mother sitting in a chair for up to a year until her death, police said.

    Linda Farr, 68, from Cardiff Grove, Stoke-on-Trent, pleaded guilty to gross negligence manslaughter in relation to the death of her 86-year-old mum, Doreen Shufflebotham.

    On Monday at Stafford Crown Court, she was given a 20-month suspended prison sentence.

    Mrs Shufflebotham died, the Staffordshire force said, while suffering from a fracture and infection of the femur, a pulmonary embolism, sepsis, deep vein thrombosis and acute bacterial meningitis.

    A caravan and more than 20 fridges have been dumped in a popular walking spot.

    Those neighbouring the site discovered the mess in Corbet Woods' car park near Shrewsbury on Monday morning.

    Police are searching for the drivers of two red vans - one of which was towing a caravan - seen nearby on Sunday night.

    Volunteers who help care for the woods say the rubbish remains in place, but work is under way to clean up the area.

    The Office of National Statistics (ONS) is highlighting issues which may have an impact on future public sector finances - including the collapse of Wolverhampton-based building giant Carillion.

    In a statement, ONS said: "We are currently investigating the various impacts of the liquidation of Carillion on the public sector finances, including in relation to the public-private partnership projects in which Carillion was involved and the additional funding that government has provided in order to maintain public services.

    Three offences were reported to the Warwickshire force over the weekend in which criminals posed as officers to target elderly and vulnerable people for cash, with a story they'd been a victim of fraud.

    They asked victims to leave their bank card and PIN number under their door mat, telling them someone would come to collect the items.

    Ch Insp Daf Goddard said: "[The offenders] often sound very convincing and can cause a great deal of distress to people who believe they have been a victim of a fraud when in fact they haven't."

    Staffordshire Police's botched investigation into the murder of a man in 2002 is being reviewed by the Merseyside force.

    The review into officers' handling of the case relating to Kevin Nunes' killing was announced in February. On Tuesday, the Staffordshire force revealed that colleagues in the north west were leading it - with proceedings already under way.

    Kevin Nunes, from Wolverhampton, died of gunshot wounds in Pattingham, Staffordshire.

    Flaws in police's original investigation led to the murder convictions of five men being overturned.
