    A man has been charged with the sexual assault and attempted rape of a woman in the grounds of a Wolverhampton church.

    Kyle Fenton, 18, is accused of the sex attack at St Patrick's Church in Wolverhampton Road, Wednesfield, on 29 April.

    Mr Fenton, from Wednesfield, but of no fixed address, was charged by detectives on Tuesday night and will appear at Walsall Magistrates' Court today.

    The pro-vice chancellor of the University of Worcester has called for more to be done to support students across the country with mental health problems.

    Ross Renton said he had seen an increase in the numbers of first-year students disclosing mental health problems.

    In a national report, external highlighting ways to widening access to higher education, Mr Renton called for the appointment of a commission for student mental health.

    Labour councillor Yvonne Mosquito has put herself forward to be the next lord mayor of Birmingham.

    The former West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner lost her job after being found guilty of serious misconduct over her involvement in a murder inquiry.

    If successful, she would be only be the ninth woman to hold the prestigious lord mayor's post.

    She has thrown her hat into the ring after lord mayor elect Lynda Clinton failed to get re-elected in last week’s local election, losing out to Conservative candidate Suzanne Webb by fewer than 100 votes in Castle Vale.

    Ms Mosquito was re-elected by a 1,000 plus majority in Bordesley and Highgate having served on the council for 22 years.

    A woman will swap her HR job to become a master model builder at the new Legoland Discovery Centre Birmingham after her boss made her apply for the competition.

    Administrator Michelle Thompson, 37, from Lichfield, Staffordshire, won the contest beating more than 7,000 people who had applied across the globe.

    She even used a build of the Bullring bull (pictured) as a chosen local landmark during the contest to impress the judges.

    Ms Thompson said: “My desk is well decorated with lots of Lego mini-figures so it’s no secret that I harbour!

    "It was my boss that actually sent me the application – she knew how perfect it was for me and had this huge belief which is what encouraged me to apply."

    A statue of Queen Victoria is being given a major clean, using toothbrushes.

    A monument in Victoria Square, Birmingham by Thomas Brock was unveiled on 10 January 1901, just 12 days before the monarch's death.

    The current statue was cast in bronze in 1951, to mark the Festival of Britain.

    Telecoms giant BT is to cut 13,000 jobs over three years as it seeks to slim down its management and back-office roles.

    BT, which has bases across the West Midlands, has not revealed where the cuts will be made.

    The firm said that the job cuts and other measures would help it achieve a cost reduction of £1.5bn.

    It added that it would be hiring about 6,000 employees "to support network deployment and customer service".

    BT also intends to move its headquarters out of central London to a site yet to be announced.

    Birmingham, Coventry and Stoke have all recently been attempting to court Channel 4 after it announced plans to move out of London.

    Shrewsbury Town's promotion push begins tonight as they take on Charlton Athletic in the League One play-offs.

    The line between London and Birmingham is expected to be completed in 2026.

    A man is due in court today charged with murdering his wife, who was found dead in their home.

    The asphyxiated body of 38-year-old Sarbjit Kaur was discovered in Rookery Lane, Penn in Wolverhampton, on 16 February.

    Her businessman husband Gurpreet Singh, 42, was charged on Wednesday evening and is due to appear before magistrates in Birmingham.

    Det Ch Insp Chris Mallett from West Midlands Police said Mrs Kaur's death "shocked the community".

  15. Five charged with animal cruelty over fox cubspublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 10 May 2018

    Five people are to be charged with animal cruelty offences after the BBC broadcast pictures appearing to show fox cubs being taken into a kennel of hunting hounds.

    The police investigation began after anti-hunting activists installed hidden cameras at the South Herefordshire Hunt kennels in 2016.

    Det Insp Jonathan Roberts of West Mercia Police said the three men and two women aged between 29 and 54 would face multiple charges of animal cruelty.

    He said five would appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on 15 May.
