    The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust been ranked second worse in England for cancer care, under the latest figures published today.

    It was ranked 132 out of 133 trusts on one key measure.

    The data revealed just 68.3% of people began treatment within 62 days of an urgent GP referral - with the national target standing at 85%.

    The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust was the 11th worst on the same measure, with 74.8% being treated within the same period.

    All four members of a south Shropshire parish council have resigned because they say they have no influence on planning decisions in the county.

    It means no one remains on Nash Parish Council near Ludlow.

    Members say they haven't had a reply from any of their letters to Shropshire Council in the five years they've been in office.

    They're Shropshire's second moribund council - Bromfield has had to be taken over by Shropshire Council.

    A recycling crew in Sandwell who saved the life of an elderly man after he suffered a serious stroke have been nominated for an award.

    Last month, the crew came to the man's aid and called an ambulance after he collapsed in his home.

    The man's family praised crew members Jason, Mohammed, Michael and Javed.

    They are shortlisted for Crew of The Year in the recycling Awards for Excellence in London today.

    Two men have been jailed after police found drugs and a loaded revolver under a bed in Birmingham.

    Sol Powles, 19, was jailed for seven years after admitting possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of Class A drugs.

    Adam Khan, 20, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of Class B drugs.

    He was jailed for five years and 10 months after both men appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

    A community transport service in Shropshire says it could close if volunteers are required to obtain a commercial licence, at a cost of thousands of pounds.

    MPs will debate changes to legislation governing driving licences today.

    Marie Monk-Hawksworth, from Dial-a-Ride, said the changes would have "dire consequences".

    "People would be left stranded in their own homes, because there aren't any alternatives in a place like this".

    A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his wife who was found dead in their home.

    The body of 38-year-old Sarbjit Kaur was discovered asphyxiated in Rookery Lane, Penn in Wolverhampton, on 16 February.

    Businessman Gurpreet Singh, 42, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court this morning.

    He's next due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 14 May.

  10. Hundreds help create knitted garden displaypublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 10 May 2018

    Hundreds of knitters have helped to create what's thought to be the world's first full-sized knitted garden.

    It will be on show at the Malvern Spring Festival over the next few days.

    It's been designed and largely created by widow Clare Young, in memory of her husband, who died of cancer.

    The 4m x 4m display features a knitted hospice bed overflowing with knitted flowers and plants.

    Ms Young said she wanted to be able to bring the outside in to her husband Ken when he was ill.

    She hopes the garden will help raise £50,000 for the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham, which cared for her husband.

  11. Blue Peter time capsule on tour after builders' gaffepublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 10 May 2018

    A Blue Peter time capsule which has been under lock and key after it was accidentally dug up by construction workers is coming to Birmingham.

    The Millennium Time Capsule contains British coins, Teletubby dolls, a photograph of Diana, Princess of Wales, letters from viewers about life at the time, an insulin pen and asthma inhaler.

    It has been kept in a secret location after it was unearthed 33 years earlier than planned in February last year.

    It will tour around the UK - starting in Birmingham on 25 May - to celebrate the famous children's TV show's 60th birthday year.

    The capsule will then be sealed and stored in The National Archives until it will be seen by a new generation in 2050.

    The capsule was buried by then Blue Peter presenters Katy Hill and Richard Bacon beneath the Millennium Dome on 11 June, 1998.

    A lane has been closed on the A34 near Stoke-on-Trent due to a collapsed manhole.

    Stoke-on-Trent City Council apologised for delays due to the closure of the southbound carriageway of Stone Road caused by the collapse between Hanford and Trentham Gardens.

    Repairs to a manhole on the A500 last week saw major delays.

    Visit Birmingham said it would be the largest two-day LGBT party in the UK.

    The Chief Executive of Shropshire Council could see his salary increase by 50% if new pay guidelines are adopted.

    A report to councillors, external says a review by the Local Government Association in March recommended increasing the pay for council boss Clive Wright from £103,000 to £150,000.

    The body also recommended increasing the pay of directors from £100,928 to £120,000-£130,000.

    The report says there may be pay increases for other managers.

    Council tax in Shropshire rose by almost 6% last month in the face of "challenging" finances.

    Mr Wright has previously also benefited from a £25,000 performance related bonus, which will be removed, as well as pension benefits.

    The council said the proposed pay rises reflect the "need to recruit and retain" the best staff in a "competitive market".

    Councillors will discuss the plans at a meeting next Thursday.

    A man has been remanded in custody, charged with a terrorism offence after homes were evacuated and a controlled explosion carried out.

    An Army bomb disposal team searched a property on Brookside Avenue, Coventry, on 24 April and subsequently asked neighbouring residents to leave.

    Chez Copeland, 20, from Brookside Avenue, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, and is next due at the Old Bailey on 8 June.

    He is charged with having notes relating to explosives that were likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, two offences under the Explosives Act and possessing a stun gun.

    Warwickshire's former Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner was under police investigation when he resigned from his position, it's been revealed.

    Rob Tromans (pictured left) stood down in April, citing "personal reasons" and was still under investigation for an alleged assault when he contested and won in the Nuneaton and Bedworth council elections last week.

    Mr Tromans, who has not been arrested or charged as part of the Staffordshire Police investigation, has been approached for a comment.

    The force said they'd been asked by Warwickshire Police to investigate a report of an assault in Justice Walk Car Park, in Nuneaton, and a 49-year-old man from the town had been voluntarily interviewed.

    A statement from the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) said it would be "inappropriate" to comment on the status of any police investigations against any individual.
