    Delicate work to check if mortar shells discovered today are still active could take until tomorrow, police say, external.

    Businesses were evacuated and the area was sealed off after they were found at a building site in Chasetown.

    Army bomb disposal officers are now on the site, which used to be a munitions factory.

    If the shells are still active, officers say they'll be detonated safely and, if that has to happen on site, the nearby A5190 will be shut.

    They were called to Joyce Avenue, close to the Haywood Academy, but said there was no risk those at the school, or nearby.

    The school was in lockdown for a time as a precaution and parents say children were hiding in cupboards and under desks, with furniture pushed up against doors.

    Bomb disposal experts are checking a building site in Staffordshire where a large number of mortar shells were found earlier today.

    Police say the officers from the Army are in Chasetown, external and the area remains cordoned off to the public.

    The force says the land used to be a munitions factory and the experts are checking whether the shells are already disarmed, but it could take three to four hours.

  18. Government to look at calls to widen A5published at 14:17 British Summer Time 24 May 2018

    The roads minister Jesse Norman has promised the government will to "look closely" at calls to increase capacity on the A5.

    He was responding in parliament to the Conservative MP for Rugby, Mark Pawsey, who called for "detailed work" to improve "both safety and capacity".

    Mr Norman said the government acknowledged this was a "very important matter" and that it was well aware of the "strategic importance" of the road.
