  17. Wembley 'place of joy' for Coventrypublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 30 May 2018

    Steve Hermon
    Journalist, BBC WM

Wembley has been a place of joy for Coventry in recent years – which is in total contrast to their ‘home’ at the Ricoh Arena.

The club rents the stadium from Premiership Rugby side Wasps, with many Sky Blue fans pointing the finger of blame for that situation and their downfall directly at owners Sisu.

Coventry City enjoyed 34 years in the top flight before relegation in 2001. Years of off-the-field issues followed and the team was relegated again in 2012.

By 2017, they found themselves in the bottom tier of English Football. The Sky Blues faithful didn’t have much to shout about until their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final victory at Wembley against Wycombe last season, and their latest visit to the famous stadium proved fruitful on Monday as they beat Exeter 3-1 to secure an immediate return to League One.

The fans are now celebrating their first promotion since 1967 and hoping that their beloved club is finally on the road to recovery.

  18. Coventry players excited over future of clubpublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 30 May 2018

The Coventry City players don't want this feeling to end here and are now looking for promotion to the Championship.

Goalkeeper Lee Burge said: "It's unbelievable to see all this. This is the icing on the cake and hopefully next season we will get this again."

    Coventry team bus

Defender Tom Davies described it as a "great end to an unbelievable season". He added: "We are so happy to see them [the fans], it's something that we won't forget. These are the best days of your life and we want this to happen every season."

  19. Promotion continues a good year for Coventrypublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 30 May 2018

The good times are continuing in Coventry.

Their team have won promotion to League One and it was only in December last year that Coventry won its bid to be the 2021 UK City of Culture.
