    Immigration officials detained members of the Windrush generation, including a woman from the West Midlands, "unlawfully and inappropriately" despite their right to be in the UK, MPs have found.

    The committee examined two cases of Windrush migrants - Paulette Wilson, 62, from Wolverhampton and Anthony Bryan, 60 - who were both detained after being unable to show documents proving their immigration status.

    In the report published today, MPs and peers on the Joint Committee on Human Rights said the Home Office demonstrated a "wholly incorrect approach to case-handling and to depriving people of their liberty".

    Earlier this month, Home Secretary Sajid Javid pledged a "fresh look" at rules and said key parts of the UK's immigration policy will be reviewed.

    About £1.5m could be spent on turning a rehabilitation centre into a nursing home for people with dementia.

    Herefordshire Council has agreed to spend the money, external on the Hillside site in Hereford but only if a strong business case is drawn up to show the conversion is feasible.

    The centre was used as an annexe of the county hospital before it shut in February with the NHS saying at the time that it intended to care for more patients at home.

    The building has 22 individual rooms and is owned by the council, which says there is rising demand for older people with complex mental health needs such as dementia.

    Officers have launched an investigation after a man was shot in Nuneaton, external.

    A man is in hospital in a serious condition after the shooting, which happened shortly before 03:00, police said.

    Det Insp Jill Fowler said extra officers would be in the area, "carrying out enquiries and providing reassurance".

    An area around Bull Street remains closed for the investigation.

    The final go-ahead has been given for a merger between the trusts that run hospitals in Derby and Burton.

    The decision had been delayed back in April when the regulator NHS Improvement wanted more time to consider the plans.

    But from Sunday, the newly-renamed University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust will bring together five hospitals in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth.

    Chief executive Gavin Boyle said becoming a larger organisation would help to improve patient care by saving money, securing important services at Queen's Hospital in Burton, developing specialist services at the Royal Derby Hospital and making better use of community hospitals in Derby, Lichfield and Tamworth.

    Ritchie plays for Rafa Benitez's Newcastle side in the Premier League while McClean is still with newly relegated West Bromwich Albion.

    Rowett is currently rebuilding his squad after Stoke's relegation last season and wants to put together a team that can achieve promotion from the Championship next year.

    A public inquiry is going to be held into plans to build a £27m link road to south Hereford.

    The planned Southern Link Road will join the A49 with the A465, south west of the city, through Grafton and Grafton Wood.

    Herefordshire Council approved the plans in 2016.

    But a number of concerns were raised about the route going through ancient woodland, the loss of valuable farmland and the impact on wildlife.

    It's been revealed the Department for Transport is going to hold a seven-day inquiry into the plans in October.

  8. Cars destroyed in overnight firepublished at 08:08 British Summer Time 29 June 2018

    Nine vehicles were destroyed in a fire on an estate in the Small Heath area of Birmingham overnight.

    Fire crews were called to the site, on Sapcote Business Centre, close to Small Heath Highway shortly before 00:30.

    Twenty firefighters were sent to the scene, which was dealt with by 03:00, said the fire service.

    A man is in hospital in a serious condition after being shot in Nuneaton town centre.

    An area of Bull Street in the town remains cordoned off following the incident, said Warwickshire Police.

    Officers were called the the scene shortly before 03:00 to reports of a man in his late 20s sustaining a gunshot wound.

    Birmingham City Council has admitted it’s been failing to balance the books properly, and says senior bosses and elected members must become "more accountable".

    The Stocktake Report, external, published today, was drawn up in light of a review of council processes by Sir Bob Kerslake, and also said the use of council reserves has to stop.

    The review has been sent to the government by the improvement panel that’s been monitoring the council since 2014.

    It says it hasn’t acted quickly enough on the recommendations it was given back then and has been relying very heavily on reserves in recent times - £63m this financial year alone.

    The report concludes that "with new political and senior managerial leadership in place, the council is committed to addressing the major challenges it now faces with vigour".

    The number of cases of fly-tipping in the south of Staffordshire have fallen since the start of the year.

    Figures from South Staffordshire Council show 110 incidents were reported in January and 55 in May.

    Across the 12 months to March this year, the authority says its environmental crime team dealt with 946 incidents.

    Paramedics in Cheshire will be taking part in strike action today in a dispute over pay.

    North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) staff who are members of the GMB union will stage a six-hour walkout at the beginning of each day-shift today.

    It's the second wave of strikes after a two-hour walkout earlier this month.

    GMB said it was "a last resort" after they had "waited patiently" for the outcome of a job re-evaluation for more than 12 years.

    NWAS said it was "extremely disappointed" but plans were in place to minimise impact on patients.
