    The county council says the fire service is going to demolish the wall on London Road and make it safe.

    It says the footpath and one lane are likely to be closed for several hours between Battenhall Road and Camphill Road.

    Hundreds of athletes will attempt to outrun a steam train this evening.

    The race will take place over a three-and-a-half-mile stretch of track from 19:00.

    Organisers say there'll be two runs, with one group being on the train and the other racing against it, before they swap over.

    Fire crews are tackling a blaze involving a garage and van in Coventry.

    Plumes of black smoke can be seen from the city centre.

    Crews were called to Coventry Road, in the Stoke area of the city shortly after 15:00.

    One person is being treated at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation, said the fire service, and added the fire was under control.

  4. Taxi protest 'pointless'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 28 June 2018

    Wolverhampton Council has staff in the city centre handing out water to people who might be caught up in a "pointless" taxi protest.

    About 100 drivers travelled from Coventry earlier to stage a go-slow in protest against taxi licensing policies.

    The Unite union says hundreds of drivers obtain licences in Wolverhampton, but then ply their trade in other towns and cities, including Coventry.

    The City of Wolverhampton Council says the move follows changes in national licensing policy.

    Firefighters from Crewe have been sent to Greater Manchester to help tackle the huge moorland fire that could last "for weeks".

    The blaze near Saddleworth Moor has spread across seven square miles, in six different areas.

    The hot weather has turned some rivers in the West Midlands into little more than a trickle.

    The Environment Agency said it had rescued about 130 salmon and trout from shrinking pools on the River Teme in north Herefordshire.

    It comes as Severn Trent Water advised people to conserve water, avoid baths if possible and stop watering lawns.

    Three fire crews were called to the waterway in Cheddleton this morning.

    They say the animal somehow managed to get stuck and they used ropes to get it to safety.

    We told you earlier of the digger which had fallen on to the central reservation of the M6 in the West Midlands, between J8 and J9, shutting the whole motorway.

    Well, to remove it, Central Motorway Police Group show it had to be driven off the barriers, using its own front "scoop" to lever it free:

    The M6 motorway is blocked in both directions in the West Midlands by a tractor which has fallen off a low-loader, and landed on the central reservation.

    The carriageways between J8 and J9 have been closed to allow removal of the vehicle.

    An online petition in response to shooting being dropped from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham has now been signed by nearly 60,000 people.

    Organisers of the games say it's an optional event and they've decided not to include it.

    Editor of the Shooting Times Patrick Galbraith said people have accepted the decision is not going to be changed, but "we would like to know how the decision was made".

    "Many of our readers fear that it's part of a narrative that shooting is a negative thing, and that guns are a negative thing," he said, "in terms of shooting sports they definitely aren't".
