    A cordon has been removed in Redditch after a World War Two hand grenade turned out not to contain any explosives., external

    West Mercia Police says it was found just before midday and officers sealed off an area around Lea Croft Road while an expert explosives team was brought in.

    But, once it was found to contain nothing explosive, the cordon was removed and the grenade was disposed of.

    A man was shot in the arm during an incident in Selly Oak in the early hours of this morning, police say.

    The man in his 20s took himself to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following the shooting in Sturge Close, at about 02:00.

    Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

    Bin collection days are being shaken up in part of Staffordshire to cope with the number of new homes that have been recently built.

    Stafford Borough Council has warned residents that, from today,, external they may see their collection days changed, but should have received information through the post and can check details online.

    The authority says the changes should make the service more efficient, especially with more homes set to be built.

    Another 28 workers have lost their jobs this week because of the Carillion scandal, the Official Receiver says.

    It brings the total to 2,403, some 13% of the Wolverhampton-based firm's pre-collapse workforce.

    However, to date 12,338 staff (68% of the pre-liquidation workforce) have found secure on-going employment, it says.

    Meanwhile a further 1,249 workers have left the business during the liquidation through finding new work, retirement or for other reason.

    About 2,100 workers remain on the books.

    Farmers in Shropshire are being urged not to carry out any controlled burns in the hot weather.

    Many farmers and landowners carry out such blazes to keep heather, grass bracken and gorse on their land under control.

    But Shropshire Fire Service says surrounding areas of the countryside, external are "tinder dry" and says controlled burns shouldn't be carried out at the moment.

    The Mayor of Ludlow says Shropshire Council could irreparably damage the town's economy through its proposed changes to parking charges.

    While some hourly rates would fall, town centre car parks would charge until 20:00 instead of 18:00 and charges to park elsewhere would become more wide-ranging.

    The council says its plans are aimed at cutting congestion and freeing up spaces.

    Dozens of beer glasses were seized by Birmingham Trading Standards because they were not large enough to contain a full pint.

    Following a "significant complaint" the city council discovered the glasses at an unnamed "large" restaurant chain were about 8.10ml too shallow.

    Trading standards officers seized 41 glasses from two bars in Birmingham while the investigation also prompted a nationwide recall of the particular brand of glass.

    The council would not identify the chain or the supplier because the case did not result in a prosecution.

    An engineer who was killed by an ammonia leak at a brewery died accidentally, an inquest has concluded.

    David Chandler, from Bridgnorth, Shropshire, died at the Carlsberg plant in Northampton on 9 November 2016.

    Coroner Philip Barlow said a post-mortem examination report concluded the 45-year-old died from "inhalation of ammonia".

    The jury at the inquest said it believed the death was preventable.

    A 12-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car outside a school.

    The incident happened on the A438 outside St Mary’s High School in Lugwardine, Herefordshire shortly before 08:45 today.

    The air ambulance attended the scene, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    He was treated for cuts to the head and ankle pain by paramedics, before he was taken to Hereford hospital.

    Firefighters faced 18 grass fires in Warwickshire over the weekend, including a number of arson attacks, the fire service says, external.

    Grassland and parks were among the areas targeted, despite the heatwave causing dangerous conditions.

    In all over the weekend, the county's fire control unit dealt with about 100 calls to various incidents, it said.

    A family say they can finally start "living" again after their grandmother was told she won't be deported to South Africa.

    Brenda Ackerman has been living in Lower Broadheath, Worcestershire, with her daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters since 2012.

    Despite numerous appeals and a medical report which stated she'd be likely to die if she was sent away, her application to remain in the UK was continually refused.

    But, on Friday, she was told by the Home Office that she can stay for the next 10 years and her family say they're all overjoyed.
