Police remain at an incident outside HMP Birmingham following reports of two masked men with a firearm.
One eyewitness has told the BBC he saw what he described as a fire bomb billowing up from the prison officers staff car park.
He could then hear the popping in the intense heat of car tyres and the shattering of glass windows and windscreens.
Approximately 10 cars have been either burnt out or damaged. The staff car park is in a secure compound with a steel fence barrier which appears to have been forced open by a group of men using specialist equipment.
A company adjacent to the car park say their CCTV captured a group of three men jumping from a VW golf car and then five mins later making their escape.
The motive for the attack is unclear. One witness has told us that earlier today there was a security operation mounted by prison staff to intersect drugs which were being smuggled in to the prison.

An extensive trial of fully driverless pods, built in Coventry, is underway in Milton Keynes.
The pods, developed by Aurrigo, external, a division of the city's RDM Group, will provide what's termed "the last mile solution" providing connections with the railway station to other parts of the town.
It's hoped that if the trials are successful other places in the UK will want the same system to help reduce city centre congestion.
