    Retailer Homebase is set to announce plans to close 42 stores, putting about 1,500 jobs at risk.

    The firm has 21 stores across the West Midlands,, external including two in Worcester and several around the Birmingham area.

    Restructuring company Hilco, which bought the DIY chain for £1 in May, is expected to confirm its plans for a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) on Tuesday.

    It hasn't revealed which stores will be earmarked for closure.

  3. Man in 'light goods vehicle' crash has 'significant injuries'published at 10:04 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    Investigations are continuing after a pedestrian was hit yesterday by what the ambulance service called a "light goods vehicle".

    A spokesman said a middle-aged man was left with "significant injuries" in the crash which happened at about 13:40 in Harborne, Birmingham.

    Birmingham is the city with the greatest need for new-build homes in the UK outside London, new figures show.

    According to the data, Birmingham is currently supplying new homes at just over half the numbers it needs to fulfill long-term targets.

    The figures were calculated by taking government house-building targets each year, and setting those against a 10-year average of new-build numbers.

    Almost a decade on from the financial crash of 2008, 52% of councils saw fewer homes built last year than in the year leading up to the crisis.

    Twycross Zoo is raising awareness of the importance of orangutan conservation on Sunday.

    The Leicestershire zoo is celebrating World Orangutan Day and there is free entry for everyone with red hair, including natural, dyed or red wigs.

    Staffordshire Police says it will be increasing the number of officers in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, over the next few weeks to reassure people it's safe to visit.

    City council officers are to also offer advice to rough sleepers.

    A ruined Warwickshire castle has been restored to its former glory - using the computer game Minecraft.

    Built in the 1120s, Kenilworth was a royal castle for most of its history, but was ruined during the Civil War in 1642.

    The charity is running Minecraft workshops at the site to give visitors the chance to rebuild the famous castle.

  9. Big Life Fix helps crash victim hold handspublished at 08:24 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    A man left paralysed from the chest down after a car crash has seen "massive improvements" to his experience thanks to inventions designed as part of BBC Two's Big life Fix.

    Tobijah Thomas, who lives near Shrewsbury, severely damaged his spinal cord in the crash in 2006 and lost much of the use of his hands.

    Materials expert Zoe Laughlin worked with him to create bespoke handles to give him greater independence in the kitchen and allow him to cook with his daughter.

    She also designed a special glove that uses voice commands to help with fine motor skills, allowing him to more easily pick up an egg and hold hands with his partner.

    She said the changes had made a "massive improvement" to Tobijah's life and described seeing the results as a "special moment".

    Vaping can damage vital immune system cells and may be more harmful than previously thought, a study at the University of Birmingham suggests.

    Researchers found e-cigarette vapour disabled important immune cells in the lung and boosted inflammation.

    They "caution against the widely held opinion that e-cigarettes are safe".

    However, Public Health England advises they are much less harmful than smoking and people should not hesitate to use them as an aid to giving up cigarettes.

  12. Moorland fire 'under control'published at 07:42 British Summer Time 14 August 2018

    Fire crews are into their sixth day of tackling a large wildfire in the Staffordshire Moorlands.

    Firefighters have been at the blaze at the Roaches in Upper Hulme since it began on Thursday, but say they are getting it under control.

    Strong winds meant the fire spread quickly, with the blaze estimated to have affected a 219-acre (0.8 sq km) area - roughly a quarter of the reserve.

    Staffordshire Fire Service said Roach Road and the surrounding lanes were likely to remain closed and asked people to stay away from the area.

    There are severe delays on the M40 southbound between J12 and J11 in Warwickshire after two emergency incidents on the motorway.

    Southbound traffic was held for a time during a police incident at about 05:20 in Oxfordshire, with a crash involving a car and two lorries then closing two northbound lanes between J11 and J12.

    Travel time is about one hour and 20 minutes and there is congestion to J13 as well as routes through Gaydon, including Banbury Road and Fosse Way.
