  1. Lucy's Law: The dog behind the puppy farm campaignpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    Pet shops and dealers in England are to be banned from selling puppies and kittens under government plans, announced today.

    It is hoped the law change will stop puppy farms.

    The proposals, which have gone out to consultation, external, will mean those wanting to buy or adopt a pet less than six months old will have to go to the breeder or a rescue centre.

    Campaigners for the so-called Lucy's Law welcomed the announcement, but warned of "potential loopholes".

    The plight of Cavalier King Charles Lucy inspired the campaign.

    Taken in by Lisa Garner, from Studley in Warwickshire, five years ago, Lucy had fused hips, a curved spine, bald patches and epilepsy after years of mistreatment.

    Despite that Ms Garner said she had three years of love before she died in 2016.

    Bromsgrove Sporting's players aren't being allowed to ease off by their manager, despite an 11-0 win last night.

    It follows a 4-1 on the opening day of the season for Brendan Kelly's team, but he says he told the players afterwards "it means nothing if we don't maintain it".

    Striker Richard Gregory scored five as Sporting overwhelmed Kidlington at the Victoria Ground.

    CCTV of a mother kissing and cuddling a man accused of murdering her has been shown to a jury.

    Charlotte Teeling and Richard Bailey also appeared in footage, taken just hours before her death, holding hands on the steps of Birmingham New Street railway station, early on 23 February.

    Mr Bailey, 41, of Cooksey Lane, Kingstanding, denies murder, claiming the 33-year-old from Worcester died accidentally during "rough sex" after asking to be choked at his flat.

    The trial continues.

  4. Masonry fall library expected to reopen on Fridaypublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    A covered pathway is being built to allow visitors to safely enter Shrewsbury Library, after debris fell from the roof.

    Shropshire Council says it should allow the building to reopen on Friday.

  6. Homeless wheelchair user 'forced to sleep in car'published at 18:01 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    A Birmingham wheelchair user says housing benefit discrimination forced him to sleep in his car.

    Stephen Tyler told the BBC the city council has been unable to offer him suitable accommodation. He said he was offered temporary accommodation in a Sheffield Travelodge, along with a free bus pass to get his young children to their nursery, which he said was 90 miles away.

    An undercover investigation by Shelter and the National Housing Federation found one in 10 agents in England refused to let to those on the benefit.

    Mr Tyler, 27, said the authority “gave up on me some time ago” and that he phones “up to 20 landlords and letting agents a day and none of them will accept housing benefit”.

    Birmingham City Council said Mr Tyler was "placed into temporary accommodation" and when he turned that offer down "suitable alternative accommodation was offered that would have prevented him from having to sleep in his car".

    A prisoner has failed to return to HMP Sudbury after being on authorised leave, police have said.

    Robert Barone, who was jailed for eight years at Chester Crown Court in 2014 for wounding with intent, went missing from the Derbyshire category D jail yesterday.

    The 44-year-old, who was due to be released on 19 September, has connections to Stoke-on-Trent.

    Bomb disposal experts have carried out a controlled explosion in West Bromwich this afternoon.

    They were called when a suspicious packages was delivered to the Army Reserve office there.

  12. Jail for child sex offender who ran to Kenyapublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    A man from Shawbury has been jailed for five years for sexually assaulting young girls, after being deported back to the UK from Kenya.

    Geoffrey John Fitton, 61, was convicted of four counts of sexual assault against a girl under the age of 13 at a trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court last Thursday.

    West Mercia Police said Fitton had escaped to Kenya days before he was due to appear before Telford Magistrates' Court in 2017 and officers flew out there in February to bring him back.

    On top of the jail sentence, Fitton has been given a lifetime sex offender registration order.

  13. 'Large terrapin' spotted on River Wyepublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    This photo of what appears to be a large terrapin on the River Wye has been taken by a surprised kayaker, prompting a big response on Facebook.

    Mike Fordham from Worcester said he was on the river with his father and his brother when he spotted it, between Hoarwithy and Ross-on-Wye.

    The Marine Conservation Society confirmed it does appear to be a terrapin and the Canal and Rivers Trust website says terrapins and snapper turtles have been spotted along our waterways.

    Facemasks, knives, gloves and tools have been found in a car stopped in Erdington last night.

    West Midlands Police also tweeted to say they found small bags of grass, which was being passed off as cannabis.

    The woman who will be Labour's candidate for the Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency at the next general election is questioning the point of having unions and has cancelled her membership of two of them.

    Dr Laura Davies said she got no support from the BMA and Unite unions when she claimed she was unfairly dismissed by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.

    Dr Davies took the trust to a tribunal last year, saying she was dismissed while pregnant.

    She said the trust settled the case earlier this month, but it has not admitted any wrongdoing.

    The hospital trust has yet to comment.

    Police say they were called to Bloxwich Road South, Willenhall, this afternoon and say the man, thought to be in his 30s, has yet to be identified.

    They've sealed off the area for their forensic team to investigate and say a post-mortem examination will be carried out soon.
