The site in Oswestry is owned by Shropshire Council and the Ministry of Justice. It closed as a court in April 2011.

Under the plans, the court building would be turned into 10 apartments with eight townhouses and a pair of semi-detached homes built in the grounds on Holbache Road.

Some neighbours have raised objections that the surrounding road network could become congested.

However WSP UK Ltd, on behalf of Shropshire Council’s Transport Team, says it doesn't think it will have a severe impact on the local roads.

Inspectors said the site had fallen into a "state of crisis" under the running of private firm G4S.

They found found blood, vomit and rat droppings on the floor, sleeping staff, cockroaches and an overpowering smell of drugs.

    Quote Message

What we've got is a series of local prisons, that's prisons serving the courts, under pressure, short of staff, as a result of reductions in funding that have been made over the last eight years or so. Reduction in staffing, and a shortage of experienced staff are the absolutely key things that precipitate a decline, which is then difficult to arrest."

  15. How criminals are getting around gun lawspublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 20 August 2018

Police in Birmingham are calling for gun laws to be tightened, after a BBC investigation revealed antique weapons were legally being brought into the country to be used in crimes.

The antiques are so old - the rounds they fire are no longer produced so the government has classified them as obsolete calibre, which means that unless you have a criminal record anyone can own one. Criminals are now making their own ammunition for them.

    West Midlands Police strong room

Officers have linked several murders to these gun types including the death of Carl Campbell in 2016.

    Quote Message

The availability of antique firearms - they are easy to purchase and they don't fall under the licensing if they are possessed as an antique. We know that offenders are quoting that loop hole in the legislation at police officers when they are stopped and searched."

Det Ch Supt Jo Chilton, Head of Birmingham-based National Ballistics Intelligence Service

A Panorama documentary investigating this issue can be seen on BBC One tonight at 20:30.
