    Two men and a teenager have appeared in court, charged after the death of a man in Telford.

    Derek Whyteside, 42, of Chesterfield Road in Dawley, died after being assaulted in Withywood Drive in Malinslee on 18 June.

    A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with his murder.

    William Owens, 41, and Gareth Edward Owens, 39, both of Boulton Grange in Randlay, were charged with affray.

    All three appeared at Stafford Crown Court and were remanded into custody, to next appear at the same court in September.

    A wife of a former prisoner in Birmingham says her husband was fearful of his life while serving time there last year.

    The woman who only wanted to be known as Wendy was speaking to Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Two.

    The chief inspector has heavily criticised the Winson Green jail, run by G4S, after some inmates told inspectors that they were too scared to leave their cells.

    It was a hell-hole. He was classed as a good prisoner, but he ended up behind his door for three months - he couldn't leave because he was fearful for his life. He was frightened that he'd be killed by the other inmates. He ended up getting a transfer to another prison luckily. The nurses weren't bringing him his medication, because they were fearful of going on to his wing and the guards can't give medication out."

    A man is critically ill in hospital with serious head injuries after he was attacked in Worcester.

    Police were called to the Lowesmoor area on Saturday night and found the 20-year-old just after 21:00.

    A 37-year-old man from Worcester's been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and released on police bail.

    The chief inspector of Prisons in England and Wales says he was forced to leave a wing at HMP Birmingham due to the heavy smell of drugs.

    The government has announced that it is to take control of the privately run prison due to concerns about violence and drugs.

    Mr Clarke added it was the "worst prison" he had "ever been to". and that "surely somebody must have been asleep at the wheel".

    The Environment Agency says they were reported by bailiffs in Telford.

    The agency says, if set illegally, the traps can be very damaging to protected wildlife, pets and the public.

    The former Stoke City, Burnley and Northern Ireland forward Jimmy McIlroy has died at the age of 86.

    He made 55 appearances for his country, scoring 10 goals between 1951 and 1965, and helped them reach the World Cup quarter-finals in 1958.

    Burnley have called him their "greatest ever player" and, after leaving the Clarets, McIlroy made 116 league appearances for Stoke before moving to Oldham and retiring from playing in 1967.

    A prison teacher working in a prison has been jailed after £60,000 of cannabis was found in his locker.

    Carpentry tutor Andrew Julian, 32, of Haven View, Ashbourne, was given a 32-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.

    Staffordshire Police said a weekly patrol by a drugs dog in June 2017 uncovered a holdall stuffed with cannabis, cannabinoid and cannabis resin in a locker , externalat HMP Dovegate, near Uttoxeter.

    In a statement, prisons minister Rory Stewart said the sentence sent a "clear message" and that the "full force of the law" would be brought on anyone who abuses their position as a prison officer.

    Footage shows the scale of a fire that swept through a derelict factory in Birmingham.

    It started at the unit on Priory Road in Aston at about 17:00 and six crews battled to stop it spreading to nearby buildings.

    A Birmingham man charged with two counts of attempted murder after a car crashed outside the Houses of Parliament has appeared in court.

    Salih Khater, of Highgate Street, Birmingham appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning.

    The 29-year-old spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and that he was British during the six-minute hearing.

    He's next due to appear at the Old Bailey later this month.

    A fire that destroyed a caravan and spread to a building this morning is believed to be arson, the fire service says.

    Firefighters were called to Foley Street, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, just after 09:00, external and took just over an hour to get it under control.

    A masked man armed with an axe has raided a supermarket in Wolverhampton.

    Police said it happened at the Co-Operative store on Stafford Road in the Oxley area of the city at around 10:00 on Sunday morning.

    The man demanded money from staff and took a a quantity of cash before leaving the store.

    Police said nobody was injured but that people were left shaken.
