    Councils in the West Midlands overspent their budgets by £43.7m on children's services in the last financial year, analysis has revealed.

    BBC News has been looking at local authority finances in the wake of the plight of Northamptonshire County Council which has had to approve "radical" cuts to tackle a £70m funding shortfall.

    Last year, 72,600 children in England were in care, compared with 64,000 in 2010 - the cost of looking after those children falls to local councils.

    Across the region, only Birmingham City Council, with -£11.9m, and Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council (-£0.3m) spent less than their planned budgets, whereas Warwickshire overspent by the most, £10.2m.

    The County Councils Network says local authorities have had little choice but to overspend on vital care services.

    The Department for Education said it had made £200bn available to councils up to 2020 for local services.

    The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed Moeen Ali is available to Worcestershire for Saturday's T20 Blast quarter-final against Gloucestershire, external at New Road.

    The all-rounder's had official clearance to play in the game as the Pears look to try to make finals day in the T20 contest for the first time.

    Moeen goes into Saturday's T20 match in good form, having hit 115 in their last game against Birmingham Bears.

    Some 2.3 million people visited the West Midlands last year, a 6% rise on 2016, according to regional marketing operation the West Midlands Growth Company, external.

    The area attracted more international visits than ever before and the highest proportion of business visits in the UK, the organisation said.

    The highest number of tourists visited from the Republic of Ireland, followed by Poland, Germany, France and USA.

  6. House of Fraser u-turn 'to safeguard 150 jobs'published at 14:42 British Summer Time 23 August 2018

    Telford and Wrekin Council has welcomed a u-turn on plans to shut the town's House of Fraser store.

    It comes after the retail chain's new owner, Sport Direct, agreed revised terms with its landlord. The firm said the move would safeguard more than 150 jobs.

    Telford was one of six stores across the West Midlands scheduled to close - including Birmingham, Leamington Spa, Shrewsbury, Worcester and Wolverhampton - before the firm entered administration.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said it had worked with shopping centre owners Soverign during the latest negotiations and that the decision was an "endorsement of the success and potential" of the area, external.

    Councillor Lee Carter, in charge of economic development in the borough, said it was important to use Telford's reputation as "a vibrant place to attend events" and its leisure offering to "to help regenerate our high streets".

    The saga of an escaped wallaby in Staffordshire may soon be coming to an end.

    Back on 14 August, Wild Zoological Park in Bobbington, near Stourbridge,, external said the animal, called Holly, went on the run after getting over a fence.

    Today, after tirelessly hunting the local area, staff say they have "eyes on her", she's looking healthy and they're hoping of getting her back to the zoo very soon.

    The three-year-old suffered serious burns at the Home Bargains store in the Tallow Hill area on 21 July.

    Police say a 22-year-old woman, from Handsworth, in Birmingham, was arrested this morning on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. They say she's currently in custody.

    Six other people have already appeared in court in connection with the case, including the boy's father, and are due to appear at Worcester Crown Court later this month.

    A lorry driver from Stoke-on-Trent has achieved the GCSE results he needs on a path to become a teacher - despite being wrongly diagnosed with lung cancer during his exams.

    Carl, 56, told BBC Radio Stoke he needed to get a 4 in English and Maths to continue on to university and he achieved a 6 and a 9 at Stoke-on-Trent College.

    Dudley and Stoke-on-Trent are two of the most affordable places in the UK to rent, according to a study.

    In Dudley, workers can typically expect 12.8% of their take-home salary to go on rent, compared with a national average of 22.1%. In Stoke-on-Trent it's 13.6%

    Jobs website Adzuna listed Swindon (11.5%) in Wiltshire as the best value, followed by Bradford (11.8%), Hull (11.9%), Dudley (12.8%) and Durham (12.9%).

    Perhaps rather unsurprisingly London and Oxford are the highest with some 40% of salaries going towards rent.

    Worcestershire's Moeen Ali and Warwickshire's Chris Woakes are both in England's 14-man squad for the fourth Test against India at Southampton.

    Moeen had pressed his case for a Test recall by hitting a double century for the Pears against Yorkshire as well as taking eight wickets.
