    A timid tabby cat had the "good sense" to hand herself into the local police station when she got lost and couldn't find her way home.

    Officers from Warwick Safer Neighbourhood Team arrived on duty on Wednesday to find Cookie taking shelter by their entrance door.

    Sgt Chris Kitson, by coincidence, had been chatting to the owners of a lost cat several days before and managed to inform them the feline visitor had been "taken into custody" at the station.

    After an "identification procedure" Cookie was reunited with owner Anneke, and taken home, "albeit hungry and bewildered", said Warwickshire Police.

    Wales captain Ashley Williams says the "serious" injury suffered against Mexico could have been far worse had doctors not spotted his collapsed lung.

    Williams, 34, who's currently on loan at Stoke City, suffered multiple breaks of two ribs during Wales' 0-0 draw with Mexico in the United States in May.

    The injury punctured defender Williams' lung requiring emergency surgery in a California hospital.

    He also says he's been enthused by his move to the Potters, despite being sent off in his third appearance.

    CCTV images of two bus passengers police are keen to speak to have been released by officers investigating a fatal attack outside a Wetherspoon pub.

    Matthew Powney, 31, was found with severe head injuries when police were called to reports of a fight outside The Malthouse on New Road, Willenhall, Walsall, in July.

    The pair pictured in the CCTV image, who were travelling on the 529 service, are not suspects, but officers believe they could have vital information.

    A 27-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Mr Powney, but inquiries are on-going ahead of an expected trial in December, said West Midlands Police.

    A scheme to install street skips to tackle fly-tipping has been agreed by Walsall councillors.

    Last year, there were more than 4,000 reports of illegally discarded waste across Walsall, with 2,000 tonnes of rubbish removed from the borough.

    A skip will now be put in each of its 20 wards every Saturday.

    Clearing up fly-tipping cost the council more than £400,000 last year, bosses said.

    A school in Stoke-on-Trent which has put children in isolation for wearing the wrong trousers has said it will help parents buy a new type of uniform it's introduced.

    More than 90 pupils were put in isolation at St Peter's Academy in Fenton as the trousers did not have purple piping.

    Parents and pupils had been told in March, June and July that those who did not have on the correct new uniform would be excluded from lessons, the school said.

    Head teacher Michael Astley said the uniform change was about raising standards and preparing students for life outside the school and financial help was available to parents if it was needed.

    While in Division Two, Warwickshire will be trying to make sure Durham don't get too close to their first innings total - or overtake it.

    The Bears made 310 in their first innings but, despite Olly Stone (pictured) picking up five wickets, their visitors finished yesterday 224-7.

    A consultation on raising parking charges in Ludlow ends today.

    The charge for on-street parking permits for residential homes could double from £50 to £100 per year.

    Shropshire Council also wants to limit permits to one per property.

    It says the increased charge is needed to cover costs.

    A man who died six days after being shot in a car has been described as a "superhero" by his family.

    Anthony Sargeant, 33, was shot in Rickman Drive, Lee Bank, Birmingham on 25 August, and died from a gunshot wound on 31 August.

    Mr Sargeant's family said they "and the whole community are devastated by our tragic loss".

    The force launched a murder inquiry shortly after Mr Sargeant's death and appealed for witnesses to the shooting to come forward.

    Visitors to Nuneaton's railway station are being invited to help decorate the benches there as part of a project run by a local art group.

    The event, organised by Art Alert, is being held this Friday between 11:30 and 14:00, and people can also submit art to be hung in the station gallery.

    The art group is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and has previously turned a once-disused waiting room at the station into a public art gallery.

    An on-the-run killer who almost decapitated his mother's ex in a "frenzied" attack has been recaptured.

    Andrew Craigie, 38, from Stoke-on-Trent, had disappeared from HMP Sudbury, an open prison in Derbyshire, on Wednesday morning.

    Craigie was arrested on Tixall Road, Stafford, at 23:00 on Wednesday, Staffordshire Police said.

    He was given a life term in 2007 after admitting the manslaughter by diminished responsibility of Geoffrey Watkins in a knife attack in 2006.

    The NHS is appealing to parents in the West Midlands who lose a child to seriously consider donating their organs for transplant to save another life.

    Over the last 10 years 239 children aged under 17 have been on the transplant waiting list in the region, but only 46 children have become donors.

    Research carried out for the NHS reveals fewer than half of parents would agree to their child’s organs being used to help another child live.

  15. Over 200 CSE cases taken on in last seven years by Telford teampublished at 07:58 British Summer Time 6 September 2018

    In the seven years since a child grooming gang first went on trial in Telford, the local authority's child sex exploitation team has taken on the cases of 268 children.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said 181 of those cases involved children under the age of 15 and the majority of the potential victims were young girls.

    The figures were released following a Freedom of Information request by the BBC.

    The numbers reached a peak in 2016/17 with the Children Abused Through Exploitation (CATE) team accepting 58 referrals in that year, the authority said.

    Telford and Wrekin Council said it would be too time consuming and difficult to provide figures for cases before 2011/12.

    A Coventry nightclub has been ordered to close immediately after a fatal stabbing at the weekend.

    At a licensing hearing on Wednesday, Club M in Coventry had its licence suspended by the city council. It came after Fidel Glasgow was found with fatal stab wounds on Saturday morning.

    The Specials singer Neville Staple has appealed to bystanders who "tried to step in" and stop the attack on his grandson to come forward.
