    Travel disruption caused by derailed wagons will continue right through the weekend.

    There will be no trains between Birmingham New Street and Nuneaton until the end of service on Sunday, according to National Rail.

    Services between Birmingham New Street and Leicester/Stansted are affected.

    A number of freight wagon overturned on Wednesday, blocking the line between Coleshill Parkway and Nuneaton.

    National Rail Enquiries says replacement buses are running along the route, external and passengers need to check train schedules before they travel.

    Cricket legend Basil D'Oliveira will be posthumously awarded the freedom of the city of Worcester tonight.

    Born in South Africa, D'Oliveira moved to England in 1960 because of the lack of opportunities for non-white players.

    He played for Worcestershire between 1964 and 1980, and represented England in 44 Tests.

    Councillors voted unanimously in favour of awarding D'Oliveira the honour, after a proposal was put forward by the city's mayor.

  5. Violent burglaries leave town's mayor 'feeling vulnerable'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 14 September 2018

    A mayor's told BBC Radio Stoke he feels "vulnerable" in his own town after a string of violent burglaries in the area.

    Between 17 August, external and 11 September,, external the residents of three homes in Crewe, Cheshire, have had men force their way in.

    The burglars have used weapons including a baseball bat, a machete and a Taser and two people have been seriously hurt.

    Cheshire Police, which isn't linking the break-ins, says the number of violent burglaries in recent weeks is unusual.

    However officers believe the people involved have been targeted and the wider public shouldn't be overly concerned.

    A joint letter, from four MPs, has been sent to the boss of Russells Hall Hospital, calling on her to consider her position after serious failings were reported at the A&E department.

    The hospital A&E is being investigated after concerns were raised over the deaths of 54 patients in a six-month period.

    The letter, sent in July and signed by Conservative MPs Mike Wood, Margot James and James Morris as well as Dudley North's Labour MP Ian Austin, raises concerns about the safety of their constituents.

    It called on Jenni Ord to consider her position as chair of the Dudley Group NHS Trust - citing a breakdown of professional respect and trust between the hospital's management team and senior clinical figures.

    Ms Ord confirmed she had received the letter and she understood "the required improvements have not occurred as quickly as the board or our regulators would like".

    A world champion mountain biker says the hills of Shropshire helped her to win the title five times.

    At the weekend, Rachel Atherton again won the women's downhill final at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Switzerland.

    The 30-year-old, originally from Oswestry, also earned a record sixth World Cup title in August.

    An engineering firm has collapsed with the loss of more than 140 jobs, according to administrators.

    Recovery company Butcher Woods says George Birchall Ltd, based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, has been hit by the cancellation of several large orders.

    It says nearly all staff have been made redundant, including 126 in Staffordshire and 15 in Edinburgh.

    There are plans for about 1,000 new homes on a former golf course in Staffordshire.

    Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has revealed the proposals for the area around Keele University, including the golf facility which is currently owns.

    The authority says it would also like to see parts of Silverdale and land alongside the university campus developed, to attract new businesses.

    The ideas, which form part of a 25-year plan for the borough, are due to be approved by the council's cabinet next week.

    The future of the Police and Crime Commissioner remains uncertain today after the Combined Authority failed to reach a unanimous decision over the position.

    As part of the government's devolution deal, the West Midlands was asked to incorporate the role and powers of the PCC with those of the mayor in time for the 2020 elections.

    It should see the mayor take on the PCC's duties to oversee the West Midlands police force.

    However, the seven constituent authorities have once again failed to unanimously agree on a process for combining the two positions.

    If no agreement is reached in November, it will mean that the two positions of mayor and PCC will remain separate for the 2020 elections.

    In the past month there's been an arson attack, numerous metal thefts - and sightings of teens riding bikes on the roof of the site on Green Lane, said West Midlands Police.

    A 17-year-old arrested on suspicion of burglary inside the station on Monday, has been released pending further investigation.

    The force says it no longer owns the building - it was sold off in November.

  16. Derailed train line to remain closed until Mondaypublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 14 September 2018

    The rail line between Birmingham New Street and Nuneaton is now expected to be closed until Monday, said Network Rail.

    The line was closed after a freight train derailed at Coleshill Parkway on Wednesday.

    Cranes are now being used to lift the wagons off the tracks.

    A 19th Century bridge that links Herefordshire and Gloucestershire across the River Wye will reopen later this month.

    Lydbrook Rail Bridge, known locally as the Black Bridge, was built in 1875 for the railway, but, when the line closed in 1964, it was turned into a walkway before shutting in 2016 due to safety concerns.

    An application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to repair the bridge was turned down in July.

    But Herefordshire Council says work to make the structure safe for people on the river below has allowed engineers to devise a safe, short-term solution to reopen a temporary walkway.
