    Shropshire's biggest charity shop has opened in Shrewsbury today.

    The 6,000-square-foot superstore in Castlefields is the latest venture by Severn Hospice.

    The charity has thanked volunteers, local residents and businesses for donating thousands of items to fill the shelves ready for the big opening.

  2. Commuters to get compensation if trains 15 minutes latepublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 13 September 2018

    If you use the Northern rail services in Crewe you'll soon be able to claim compensation if your train is 15 minutes late, rail minister Jo Johnson has announced today.

    Under the current Delay Repay scheme, passengers can make a claim if their train is at least 30 minutes late.

    Customers who wish to claim can complete a form on the Northern website , externalproviding proof of travel. The rail company said approved claims should be paid within 10 days.

    The changes, which only affects Northern services, come into effect in December.

  4. Emergency staff attack sentencing 'not harsh enough'published at 13:10 British Summer Time 13 September 2018

    The ambulance service in the West Midlands has welcomed a new law, increasing the maximum prison terms for people found guilty of assaulting emergency workers, but says it's still not harsh enough.

    Maximum prison terms are to double from six months to a year when the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill receives Royal Assent later and comes into force in November.

    Firefighters, police officers, NHS staff and anyone who is attacked while assisting an emergency worker are among those covered by the new law.

    Mike Duggan, operations director at the West Midlands Ambulance service said what's "disappointing" is the term hasn't been moved to a minimum of 12 months.

    A police officer has appeared in court charged with assault after two women were arrested near a bus station.

    PC Kevin McClenaghan of the West Midlands force denied two counts of assault following a disturbance near Halesowen bus station on 22 December.

    At Birmingham Crown Court today a trial date was set for 4 March 2019.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it started its investigation following a referral from the police force in January.

    Three men have been questioned by police after a herd of 18 deer were shot dead in a field in Worcestershire last month.

    The deer were discovered on farmland on the edge of the Wyre Forest.

    At the time, Edward Brown, who chairs the Wyre Forest deer management society, described the scene as "carnage".

    The men were arrested under the Deer Act and have have been released while police enquiries continue.

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of modern slavery offences, following an operation in Coventry.

    The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) said it was responding to allegations from a potential victim that the suspects, aged 38 and 49, were controlling his behaviour.

    Both suspects, arrested from addresses in the north and east of the city centre this morning, are currently in custody whilst enquiries are ongoing, said the GLAA.

    A 44-year-old man has been safeguarded and is receiving support, it said.

    A man and a woman have pleaded not guilty to murdering their baby son.

    Luke Morgan and Emma Cole, of Tunstall in Staffordshire, appeared in court charged with the murder of Tyler Morgan, in Burntwood, on 29 April 2014.

    Mr Morgan, and Ms Cole, have also both been charged with manslaughter and causing or allowing an infant death and child cruelty.

    The pair who previously lived in Burntwood have been released on bail, until their trial next year.

    Police have said a body has been found in their search for missing man Geoffrey Howson.

    Mr Howson, 70, from Denstone, Staffordshire, was reported missing on Tuesday and was thought to have travelled to Derbyshire.

    A spokesman for Derbyshire Constabulary said the body of a man was found in Mapleton, near Ashbourne yesterday, and while formal identification is yet to take place, it is thought to be that of Mr Howson.

    The search is on for a new chief executive for Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

    The authority has had an acting chief exec since the previous one, John Sellgren, left following a voting "shambles" during the general election.

    More than 1,500 people were unable to cast ballots in a seat won by just 30 votes.

    The role is being advertised with a salary of around £100,000, external.

    West Midlands Police recorded 117 child abuse image offences in the last financial year, according to the children's charity the NSPCC.

    The figures suggest an increase of 29% on the previous year.

    Across the country, an abusive image offence was reported to police every 23 minutes.

    The NSPCC is calling on the government to introduce an independent regulator to hold social networks to account to help stop images being shared.

    Damaged track will need replacing once the train has been moved from the area, said CrossCountry Trains, after the derailment close to Whitacre Junction.

    Some services between Stanstead Airport and Birmingham New Street are being diverted via Loughborough, with a reduced service operating between Nuneaton and Leicester.

    Replacement bus services are running between Birmingham International and Nuneaton.
