  9. Fears HS2 will 'cut communities in two'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    David Irwin

Residents living in part of Solihull claim the HS2 high-speed rail line will permanently cut their communities in two.

    Berkswell

Campaigners have been describing their fears that the line risked weakening the historic ties between the neighbouring villages of Berkswell and Balsall Common.

There is also widespread concern that the procession of large vehicles during the construction work will pile fresh pressure on roads that locals argue are already struggling to cope.

Both Solihull Council and HS2 Ltd have said work continues to minimise the disruption to the transport network.

  13. Bins: The five-day week and £300k overspendpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

The re-organisation of Birmingham's refuse collection service is under way in the city as of today, with the terms of the agreed resolution to last year's dispute finally implemented.

Here's BBC WM's political reporter Kathryn Stanczyszyn with analysis of workers' new schedules:

    Quote Message

This announcement draws a line under an epic dispute for Birmingham City Council that involved a High Court case, claimed the scalp of one council leader and has dogged another for almost a year.

    Quote Message

Eyebrows were raised when the council failed to the implement a deal at the beginning of this month - the second date given for the roll-out of a new schedule for workers acceptable to both sides. Essentially that deal kept the Grade 3 role - so hotly protected by Unite - but brought in a five-day working week. Was the dispute going to rear its ugly head again?

    Quote Message

The residents of Birmingham will be delighted to know the answer is no. The council says the new schedule begins today but will be rolled out for everyone over the coming weeks. It is also supposed to stem a £300,000 overspend a month in the waste service; money the council needs now more than ever as it struggles to balance a budget."

  14. Birmingham bin strike resolution finally rolled outpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Riyah Collins
    BBC News

Almost 10 months after Birmingham City Council was able to reach a deal with the city's refuse workers, those agreements are finally being implemented.

A three-month strike last summer led to thousands of tonnes of rubbish being piled up on Birmingham's streets. You might remember the mess, but less so the reasons behind it - remind yourself here.

From today, grade three refuse workers - whose jobs were at risk - will assume new roles with a greater focus on recycling and all workers will do five-day weeks.

The council said it would lead to a more "modern, effective and efficient waste collection service" and residents could expect service as usual.

About 60,000 fines have been handed out at the site, under the Whittle Arch, right by Pool Meadow bus station, since June 2016.

In that time, 154 appeals have been sent to an independent adjudicator and 138 tickets overturned.

The adjudicator's decisions, seen by BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, make repeated reference to a lack of adequate signage and road markings at the bus gate.

Last week, the council replaced signs and installed road markings as it opened the bus gate to black cabs - but insists signs at the site have always been up to scratch.

The Potters man missed the 4-1 hammering by Wales and the friendly draw in Poland after breaking a wrist in a Republic of Ireland training session.

Initial estimates suggested McClean, 29, would be out for six weeks but he hopes to return sooner than that.

Stoke's last game before the international window is against Norwich on 6 October.

    Quote Message

They say six weeks but I'm hoping for a lot quicker. I'm 10-11 days post-surgery so we're getting there. I start training [Monday], non-contact. It's just frustrating but I can't wait to get back playing as quick as possible."
