    The chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover was "making it up" when he warned that a hard Brexit would wipe out its profits and cost tens of thousands of jobs, a Tory Brexiteer has claimed.

    Former shadow minister Sir Bernard Jenkin accused Professor Dr Ralf Speth of scaremongering over a prediction that crashing out of the EU would have a "horrifying" effect on the firm's business.

    Speaking in Birmingham last week the boss of the UK's biggest carmaker warned the government to get the "right Brexit" or it could wipe out his firm's profits and end in big job cuts.

    Sir Bernard, a member of the Eurosceptic European Research Group, told BBC Radio 4's Today: "I'm afraid I think he's making it up."

    His comments were described as "embarrassing" by Conservative MP Anna Soubry, and Labour Leamington and Warwick MP, Matt Western tweeted, external "no wonder the public is losing faith in politicians".

    A police car has been taken off the road in Darlaston after two people on a moped threw a brick through the windscreen.

    West Midlands Police said officers were dealing with a domestic incident in the Moxley area yesterday when the car was targeted. Officers are hunting for those responsible.

    Last month, it was revealed the cost of rural crime across the UK had risen to £44.5m, including a 30% increase in the Midlands, largely due to organised criminal gangs.

    People are being urged to stop fishing with super-strength magnets after guns and grenades were dredged from the Midlands canal network.

    Magnet fishing is becoming increasingly popular, but two people died this summer after falling into a canal in Huddersfield. The Canal & River Trust is urging people to stop putting their safety at risk.

    The Price family, from Rugby in Warwickshire, have recovered old guns during their fishing expeditions and have reported them to local police.

    Witnesses to a "sickening" attack on a traffic warden are being urged to come forward.

    A man has been arrested after a traffic warden was dragged from his moped and kicked and stamped on before his vehicle was stolen.

    Police said the 19-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of robbery after handing himself in following Friday's attack in Alum Rock, Birmingham.

    A 20-year-old man arrested earlier on suspicion of robbery has been bailed.

    Men captured on CCTV may have information which can help the investigation, said West Midlands Police.

    The UK's oldest living person has celebrated her 112th birthday.

    Born on 16 September 1906, Grace Jones of Broadway in Worcestershire has seen the outbreak and resolution of two world wars, and lived through the Russian Revolution, the sinking of the Titanic, and all three London Olympics.

  13. Bikers arrested after 'disgusting and dangerous' actspublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Five people were arrested, and eight vehicles seized, after a ride-out by bikers in Coventry, external.

    About 40 bikers rode around the city on Saturday, "in memory of an individual who was sadly killed a year ago," said West Midlands Police.

    Five motorbikes were stopped using stinger devices, it said.

    Insp Rich Vickers said members of the public would have witnessed some "disgusting and dangerous acts" by the riders, and the force would continue to target those who endanger lives through their "stupidity and recklessness".

    Motorists are being warned about the dangers of tailgating as Highways England reveals it's the cause of one in eight serious accidents.

    In 2016, tailgating contributed to almost 300 casualties on roads in the Midlands, it said.

    Across the country, the organisation said more than 100 people are killed or seriously injured each year in accidents where a vehicle has driven too close to the one in front.

    Police are investigating after a man was shot in the leg, in the Lee Bank area of Birmingham.

    Officers were called to a disturbance involving a group of youths on Longleat Avenue at about 16:10 on Sunday afternoon.

    The 26-year-old's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, said West Midlands Police.

    A normal service has resumed between Birmingham New Street and Nuneaton after a freight train derailed.

    The derailment, on Wednesday, saw a number of wagons overturn and block the line at Coleshill Parkway.

    Work to remove the carriages was completed earlier than expected, said National Rail.

    Telford station's new £10m footbridge has been lifted into place - a day later than expected.
