    Plans for a new quarry look set to be approved in Shropshire.

    JPE Holdings wants to extract 3.5 million tonnes of sand and gravel over 14 years from green-belt land on Bridgnorth Road, Shipley, between Bridgnorth and Wolverhampton, because its site in Staffordshire is due to close.

    A planning report is due before Shropshire Council next week, external and says the need for building materials outweighs other considerations and the land will be restored in 15 years time.

    However, the proposals have been opposed by Claverley Parish Council over issues including road safety and damage to woodland.

    Warwickshire fast bowler Olly Stone has been called up for the first time by England to be part of their Test squad to face Sri Lanka this winter.

    For the 24-year-old, it comes just days after he was also called up for the first time for England's ODI squad to tour the same country next month.

    He's taken 37 wickets at 12.27 for Warwickshire in Division Two this season.

    Fellow Bears player Chris Woakes keeps his place in the squad, along with Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali.

    Police searching for a university student who disappeared during Freshers' Week are appealing for people who may have used a footbridge at the time he went missing to come forward.

    They've continued their search today along the River Severn in Worcester, around the area where Thomas Jones, 18 was last seen, early on Wednesday morning.

    Officers say the Sabrina Footbridge, a crossing between Worcester Racecourse and Hylton Road, is a natural route for students heading between the town centre and the university., external

    Because of that, they're calling on anyone who used the bridge between 03:30 and 04:00 on Wednesday to come forward.

    Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar's revealed running around with an umbrella at Crewe Alexandra almost cost him his move to Anfield.

    But his career almost didn't take off at Liverpool when, he reveals, he nearly blew his first opportunity to impress then-Reds manager Bob Paisley while on loan at Crewe.

    "When I ran in from the warm-up, our manager was shaking his head. I said 'what's the matter?' and he said 'those two very important people came to watch you play'. They had then gone to watch Stoke City play Port Vale instead.

    "It was maybe because I was running outside with an umbrella to do my warm-up because it was raining."

    Thousands of tickets for a BBC children's TV Christmas panto in Stoke-on-Trent sold out in under an hour today.

    The CBeebies Christmas Show, Thumbelina, is set to be filmed at the Regent Theatre in November and then broadcast in December.

    The first of batch of about 6,000 tickets went on sale at 09:00 and went in about 45 minutes.

    Last year, when the pre-school festive show was staged in Leicester, there were more than 370,000 applications for tickets.

    Friends of a missing university student are putting up hundreds of posters as the search for him continues.

    His family and police say Thomas Jones' disappearance in Worcester is "out of character" and he's not been seen since Wednesday.

    Specialist divers have been brought in by West Mercia Police as they check the River Severn by Worcester Rowing Club.

    A group of his friends say they're handing out the posters and flyers this afternoon as they want to raise awareness of his disappearance.

    Taxpayers across Worcestershire are being warned to expect another council tax rise next year due to serious budget problems at the county council.

    About £17m needs to be saved by March and at least another £8m in the 2019/20 financial year, with the authority saying as many jobs as possible are set to be 'deleted' once staff leave. , external

    The council's also admitted there's a risk of bus services being scaled back while libraries are to be placed under review.

    The authority says it can't guarantee there won't be more increases in council tax in the future.

  16. Two trapped on narrow boats by falling treepublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 21 September 2018

    Two people became trapped when a tree fell on to two narrow boats at a Warwickshire wharf last night.

    The falling tree caused one of the boats to tip on to its side, said the fire service, but the trapped people managed to get out of the boat without help.

    The water rescue unit, along with fire crews, was sent to Clifton Wharf, in Clifton-upon-Dunsmore, shortly after 23:00, said the fire service.

    Machinery was used to lift the tree from the boats to make the scene safe, it said.

    The leader of Telford and Wrekin Council has delivered a scathing attack, external on senior NHS managers in the county, saying he has "issues" with how they're running local hospitals.

    Labour's Shaun Davies was responding to news the trust that runs the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals is under increasing scrutiny for the way it's run.

    This week, it emerged a review into baby deaths and serious injuries is now looking at more than 100 cases.

    Additionally, the Care Quality Commission confirmed it had also taken urgent enforcement action against maternity units run by the NHS trust, following a recent inspection.

    Trust chief executive Simon Wright has been approached for an interview, but has yet to respond.
