  9. Hospital A&E situation 'unsustainable'published at 09:46 British Summer Time 26 September 2018

    BBC Shropshire

For months, the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has struggled to recruit enough consultants in A&E and more recently has also faced a shortage of middle grade doctors and nurses.

Unlike Shrewsbury, Telford is not a registered trauma unit.

The A&Es have been below safe staff limits for some time and closing the Telford unit overnight had been a contingency measure for several months.

Speaking in August, Chief Executive Simon Wright said the trust needed about 20 middle-grade A&E doctors, but had just 10.

At the time, he described the situation as "fragile" and said the two departments had only been kept open thanks to the dedication of staff covering shifts - a position he said was "unsustainable"

It was also revealed last month that an A&E nurse had resigned citing safety reasons.

Tonight, against Premier League opposition, our younger players will benefit from the game. [They will benefit from] the speed, the precision, power, accuracy and the intelligence. They won't lose from that in the long-run despite the result. In terms of the levels needed, that was a great test for us tonight."
