    A man has appeared in court charged with murdering an 87-year-old who died after a violent break-in at his home.

    Arthur "Bob" Gumbley died in hospital three weeks after he was attacked during a burglary in Sutton Coldfield in November 2017.

    Jason Wilsher, 19, of Barlestone Road, Bagworth, appeared before magistrates in Newcastle-under-Lyme earlier and is next due at Stafford Crown Court on Friday.

    The family of a 29-year-old motorcyclist who died in a crash near Ross-on-Wye last Thursday have said he "had one of the kindest hearts going".

    Rob Boyd from Walford, near Ross-on-Wye, collided with a pedestrian in his 30s on the A40 near Symonds Yat services and both were pronounced dead at the scene.

    The family statement went on to say: "He had a passion for music and motorbikes and will always be remembered for his laid back and warm nature.

    "Rob always left a mark wherever he went and we're all devastated from the news and it still hasn't quite sunk in yet."

    Port Vale manager Neil Aspin reacted angrily to claims that he played Cristian Montano last night, before he'd fully recovered from an injury.

    Montano came on at half time, but lasted less than 20 minutes before going off injured again, meaning Vale had to play the last half hour with 10 men.

    Aston Martin makes its debut on the London Stock Exchange today

    The Gaydon-based firm is floating 27.5% of its business.

    It initially set its shares at £19 each, valuing the car maker at £4.33bn.

    However, that has now fallen to £18.50.

  7. Motorcyclist seriously injured in HGV crashpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

    A motorcyclist has sustained serious injuries in a crash involving an HGV.

    The woman, in her 40s was airlifted to hospital after the collision on the Hinckley Road, near Wolvey, at about 13:00 on Monday.

    Warwickshire Police is appealing for witnesses and a man in his 30s is assisting officers.

    Officer would also like anyone who has dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

    Fans of both sides were left frustrated last night, when Walsall and Shrewsbury had to settle for a goalless draw.

    Walsall missed the chance to break into the promotion places in League One and Shrewsbury Town have dropped to 20th.

    John Askey's Shrewsbury side have won only once in the league this season and are among the lowest-scorers in the division, with just nine goals in 11 games so far and afterwards he said there was "still room for improvement".

    Walsall manager Dean Keates said his side needs to be more ruthless and that it was "fine margins, and we're falling just short at the moment".

    A coach fire near Leek has caused about 100 litres of diesel to spill on to the road.

    Staffordshire Fire and Rescue service said it was called out to Onecote Road, near the Jervis Arms, at 09:15 and nobody was hurt.

  11. Man stable after police shootingpublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

    A man is in a stable condition after he was shot in the arm by police during dawn raids.

    The 30-year-old is being treated for non-life threatening injuries and is under arrest on suspicion of firearms offences.

    Officers forced entry to the house in Shepherds Gardens, Edgbaston, at around 05:00 yesterday looking for a man wanted in connection with a firearms offence.

    Six people were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences - five have been released pending further investigation.

    A sixth person has been charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition and will appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court later.

    The shooting was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

    Hereford Football Club have confirmed Marc Richards has been appointed the club's new head coach.

    The Bulls' board interviewed four applicants for the post before opting for Richards, who chairman Ken Kinnersley described as a "very impressive young man".

    Richards has been the manager at Gloucester City this season.

  13. Cabinet backs action against rogue landlordspublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

    Strict new powers enabling Coventry City Council to issue fines of up to £30,000 to rogue landlords have been approved by its cabinet.

    Penalties will be issued against landlords who have acted irresponsibility against tenants, or have failed in maintaining legal standards in housing.

    The council is also able to apply banning orders, and rent repayment orders.

    The new measures make up the council’s Policy for Enforcing Standards in Private Sector Housing, which was authorised by Coventry City Council’s cabinet on Tuesday.

    It is hoped the new policy will improve the quality of housing in Coventry’s private rented sector, while it could also help tackle overcrowding.

    Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities Councillor Ed Ruane said: "This is an attempt to achieve the best quality housing and the best way we can do that is by working closely with landlords in the city."

    The measures could be implemented by the beginning of November. All income obtained from civil penalties will be retained by the council and spent on housing enforcement issues.

    West Midlands Police says officers are working with Aston Villa to find a fan who threw a cabbage at under-pressure manager Steve Bruce.

    The vegetable, which now even has its own Twitter account, did not hit Bruce.

    However, he said the incident at Tuesday's home 3-3 draw with Preston showed a lack of respect.

  16. Train shortage and break down cause chaos for commuterspublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

    A shortage of trains led to chaos for commuters travelling between Shrewsbury and Birmingham.

    West Midlands Railway said an overnight shortage caused delays of more than 30 minutes to the 06:53 and 07:15 services.

    But there were more problems when an Aberystwyth to Birmingham Service broke down at Telford Central, leaving the two services and the 07:47 trapped behind.

    The blockage has now been removed, but passengers were still facing a delay of 90 minutes.

    Just after 10:30, the railway said a normal service would be able to resume on the line.

    A Worcester man says he is "shocked and angry" after thieves stole a van which he uses to feed homeless people in the city.

    Steve Gillgan, who lives in Hallow, is a trustee at the Good Soil Trust which delivers hot food to homeless people outside the Maggs day centre in Worcester (pictured below) every Saturday night.

    He said the van was taken from the drive outside his house, while he slept on Sunday night.
