    An attack on prison officers during a disturbance at a high-security men's jail, highlights "intolerable working conditions" staff are having to endure, said the Prison Officers' Association.

    Disorder broke out at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire on Sunday morning following the search of a wing.

    Of the staff hurt, three have head injuries, two have suspected fractured jaws and one has a broken arm, it said.

    "Our prisons continue to lurch from crisis to crisis and prison staff need the protective measures to quell the unprecedented levels of violence they face".

    Two children who were hit by a car in Crewe yesterday are not thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries, Cheshrie Police said.

    The pair were airlifted to Alder Hey Hospital after being hit yesterday morning.

    The force is appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened on West Street at 10:35.

    Birmingham City Women were gifted a goal in their clash with rivals Man City yesterday.

    Abbie McManus's backpass from inside the opposition's half bounced over goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck giving Birmingham a 1-0 lead on seven minutes.

    Despite the early goal, City redeemed themselves and won the tie 3-2.

    A health chief, one of the architects of the transformation of NHS services in Shropshire, is to step down.

    Dr Simon Freeman has been leading the Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as its accountable officer since October 2016.

    Together, the Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin CCGs have overseen the Future Fit project, that culminated with a pledge of £312m to remodel services in Shropshire.

    A consultation has recently closed and the preferred option stated as part of that was to centralise A&E and maternity care in Shrewsbury, with planned surgery moving to Telford.

    A final decision has yet to be made, but the plans have attracted a lot of criticism, particularly from politicians and residents in Telford.

    Last week, the hospitals trust revealed the Telford A&E would close overnight for at least six months due to staff shortages, prompting anger from residents and even calls for the trust to be put into special measures.

    Dr Freeman said retirement was a "personal decision" and that he had "already stayed on past my planned retirement".

    He will leave the CCG at the end of March 2019 after working a six-month notice period.

    The Potters find themselves in 17th place after 10 games.

    Rowett told BBC Radio Stoke his team just need to cut out their defensive mistakes.

    Stoke came back from 2-0 to draw 2-2 on Saturday.

    Telford MP, Lucy Allen, is to meet with the Health Secretary to discuss the overnight closure of Telford's A&E department.

    Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust board decided last week the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford would suspend services overnight.

    The department will shut from 20:00 to 08:00 from November for six months.

    The Conservative MP said she wanted to ensure problems at the Princess Royal were "centre -stage".

    The collision happened at about 10:30 yesterday on West Street.

    Supermarket firm Aldi has confirmed that it will open 130 new stores in the UK over the next two years in a move it says will create 5,000 new jobs.

    It helps the Atherstone-based company move towards a previously stated target of 1,000 stores by 2022.

    The announcement comes as Aldi revealed that sales grew 16.4% across the UK and Ireland to a record £10.2bn in 2017. Full-year operating profit rose 26% to £266m.

    An ambitious vision to create a national park in the West Midlands has been put forward.

    It would span more than seven cities and create hundreds of miles of green space, conservation areas and new cycle routes.

    The bold proposals, drawn up by landscape architect Kathryn Moore, would make the region home to the UK’s 16th official national park.

    "It's based on the idea," she said, "that the landscape isn't just the trees and the grass, but it's to do with the cultural identity of the region."

  18. Investigation launched into death of suspected burglarpublished at 08:06 British Summer Time 1 October 2018

    The Independent office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating a man's death in Coventry.

    The suspected burglar died when he fell from a roof, police said.

    Officers were called to Robin Hood Road, Willenhall, Coventry, on Saturday evening to reports of a car hitting parked vehicles.

    The driver fled from the car and climbed on to the roof of a house nearby before falling, said West Midlands Police.

    Officers arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of attempted burglary. He was taken to hospital and died on Sunday.

    A "mandatory referral" to the IOPC had been made, it said.
