    The widow of a man who died after falling into the River Severn on a night out says she's "devastated" that his memorial has been vandalised.

    Shane Walsh died 11 months ago and Kirsty said she didn't know how to explain the vandalism to their children.

    West Mercia Police says it's examining CCTV footage of the area in Shrewsbury.

  2. Thousands sign petition to save cat rescue centrepublished at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2018

    A petition to support a Wolverhampton cat rescue centre has gathered 13,000 signatures in just a few days.

    The city council says The Arc in Wednesfield should be classed as a cattery and needs a licence, but its owner, Sally Edwards is disputing that.

    Ms Edwards said The Arc, based out of a four-bedroom house, had rehomed more than 1,000 cats in the five years it has been in operation.

    A spokesperson for the city council said its legal department was working with city planners to see what could be done.

    A local councillor said it had not yet placed a planning enforcement notice on The Arc nor issued any formal action against the centre.

    People living in temporary accommodation, paid for by Coventry City Council, could soon be housed in a tower block, leased by the local authority.

    The council has spent £4.1m placing homeless people into temporary accommodation this year, with some families staying longer than the six-week legal limit.

    The city council said it's looking at ways to provide more suitable emergency and temporary accommodation at a more cost-effective rate, including possibly buying and building its own temporary accommodation.

    At a meeting next week, councillors will also discuss plans to lease apartments in a Manor Farm , externaltower block, at a net cost of £1.7m.

    Plans to turn the Old Art School in Sutton Coldfield into a dozen homes were approved despite concerns the residents would have no dedicated parking spaces.

    The building was established by the Sutton Coldfield Technical Education committee in 1904, with 169 students initially enrolled.

    It was later incorporated into the Sutton Coldfield College campus as an arts school.

    There appears to be no immediate end in sight for the armed incident in the Merry Hill Area of Wolverhampton.

    It started when police arrived to make an arrest on Laurel Grove and armed officers were called in when they were threatened, West Midlands Police said.

    Shrewsbury's multi-storey car park is losing 200 spaces until further notice, because urgent repairs need to be carried out.

    Shropshire Council said it had been planning to improve the barriers, which prevent cars striking the walls, in the new year, but had to bring the work forward for safety reasons.

    The local authority said: "During a recent inspection it was noted that the existing restraints on the outer edges of the car park have degraded."

    It has apologised for the reduction in the number of spaces in the car park, which is usually busy in the run-up to Christmas.

    An area around Lady Herbert's Garden and Fairfax Street in Coventry has been closed following an emergency incident in the city centre.

    The ambulance service said it was called at 15:15 to the area, close to Millennium Place, to reports of a patient suffering a cardiac arrest.

    It currently has two ambulances and a paramedic at the scene.

    Auctioneers say a collection of Shrewsbury Town programmes could fetch more than £10,000 today.

    They belonged to retired Telford police officer Dave Bridgwater, who died earlier this year, and go back as far as the 1951 season.

    The collection contains about 3,000 programmes and will be sold at Hansons in Derbyshire.
