  9. Doubling of school exclusions 'contributing to knife crime'published at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2018

A doubling in school exclusions in the West Midlands in the past eight years is one of the "biggest contributors" to knife crime, according to the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

David Jamieson said he believed some schools were simply "getting rid" of troubled or low-attaining students in an attempt to improve their Ofsted results.

Figures from the Department for Education have revealed that 727 children were excluded from schools in the region last year, up from just 380 in 2009-10.

All seven constituent authorities of the West Midlands Combined Authority had an exclusion rate above the national average in 2016-2017, with Dudley’s exclusion rate the third worst in the country.

“We shouldn’t be giving up on them," he said.

  18. Twenty thousand retail jobs gopublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2018

    BBC Business News

Some 20,000 people have lost their jobs in the retail sector this year, according to figures compiled by BBC News.

Falling sales and the rising costs of running shops, including business rates have been blamed for the drop, but the rise in online sales is seen as perhaps the biggest factor.

    Graphic

The numbers cover the big brands, but not the smaller independent stores that typically employ a handful of people.

A further 4,000 redundancies are expected in the coming months through planned closures at the likes of Homebase and Evans Cycles.

Just five years ago, online sales accounted for 5% of shopping, but by this October, it had risen to 18%.

If you or your family have been affected, we'd love to hear from you.
