  1. Cyclist hit by lorry seriously injuredpublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2018

    A cyclist suffered serious injuries after being hit by a lorry in Malvern yesterday.

    Emergency crews were called to the B4218 Walwyn Road, in Colwall at about 16:10.

    He was taken to Strensham Airbase, before being airlifted to hospital in Coventry, said the ambulance service.

    The lorry driver was unhurt.

  2. Thousands affected by burst water mainpublished at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2018

    Several thousand customers are affected by the burst water main on Hagley Road, in Birmingham, Severn Trent Water said - many either without water or with low pressure.

    Engineers were called to the site in the early hours of the morning, after the burst in a 20" pipe. The video below shows the scene last night.

    Two lanes are currently closed, with severe travel delays in the area. The closures are expected to last most of the day, Severn Trent said.

    Bus diversions are in operation, with drivers being told to avoid the area.

    Fireworks, wheelie bins, knives and scooters have all been used to attack ambulances and rapid response vehicles in the past three years, a BBC freedom of information request has found.

    More than 200 acts of vandalism were reported between 2015 and October, some also featuring metal poles and bricks.

    The West Midlands had the most offences with 36, followed by 29 in Yorkshire, 26 in London and 24 in the North West.

    The government recently increased the maximum jail term for anyone assaulting ambulance staff from six to 12 months.

    Disruption is expected for most of the day, said Network West Midlands.

    There's currently three miles of queuing traffic on Hagley Road, in Birmingham, from the Ivy Bush traffic lights to Five Ways Island.

    There's also congestion to Lighwoods Park and Kings Head Clock in Bearwood.

    Severn Trent engineers are at the site of a burst water main, which has closed two lanes of the road, and there's also a broken down car just before Five Ways.

    Travellers are being advised to avoid the area.

  7. Could fewer bins mean less litter?published at 07:42 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2018

    Littering and fly-tipping could be reduced by cutting the number of litter bins, researchers who worked with Herefordshire Council have concluded.

    Balfour Beatty Living Places worked with 10 local authorities on the study and believe that by removing bins, people are encouraged to "take responsibility for their waste" and take it home or dispose of it correctly.

    Herefordshire Council said the results of the research needed further study, but "it is clear that behavioural change is necessary to reduce littering and fly-tipping; not to just simply increase the number of bins on our streets".

  8. Car and tanker crash causing severe M6 delayspublished at 07:28 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2018

    A tanker and a car have been involved in a crash that's closed two lanes of the M6 in the West Midlands.

    So far, there's eight miles of queuing traffic on the southbound carriageway after the collision at J7 for Great Barr.

    Traffic was held for a short time to clear glass from the carriageway.

    The former Archbishop of Birmingham, Vincent Nicholls, will give evidence at the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse today.

    The inquiry is examining the Birmingham archdiocese's response to allegations made against four priests including Father John Tolkien, son of novelist JRR Tolkien, who died in 2003.

    The allegations span 30 years from the 1950s to the 1980s and concern St Joseph's, based at Croome Court and Besford Court, in Worcestershire.

    Cardinal Nicholls, now the Archbishop of Westminster, was due to give evidence in October, but withdrew due to ill health.

    A burst water main has closed two lanes of the A456 Hagley Road eastbound after the Plough and Harrow Road traffic lights in Birmingham.

    A large volume of surface water is being reported in the area.

    Worcester's CCTV cameras are going to be upgraded at a cost of £550,000, after an extra £398,000 funding was approved by city councillors.

    There are 66 cameras in the city and most are nearly a decade old, with the cabling which carries the images up to 20 years old.

    The issue of CCTV cameras was raised again earlier this year when student Tom Jones was found dead in the River Severn and it emerged a camera that should have recorded his last movement hadn't been working for a year.
