    Planned charges designed to curb air pollution in Birmingham city centre have been reduced.

    The worst polluting cars and taxis operating in the clean air zone will now pay £8 a day - with trucks and coaches paying £50.

    Previously the city council had said drivers could pay up to £12.50 a day and bigger vehicles £100.

    The changes are set to come into force at the start of 2020 - but there will be exemptions for residents living within the clean air zone.

    A giant mobile illuminated peace poem will travel around Coventry as part of a campaign to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

    #HumansOfCov is the first major arts campaign since the city won the title of UK City of Culture 2021.

    It's hoped the poem, Paper Peace, will throw a spotlight on to the human rights of people across the city and beyond, said organisers.

    Chenine Bhathena, Creative Director for Coventry City of Culture Trust, said the city was perfectly placed to be at the centre of this important conversation.

    “We are known as a sanctuary, a place of welcome, a safe home and a city that promotes peace. This is a great opportunity to explore our place in this global conversation," she said.

    A 44-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot dead in Coventry, has been released by police pending further investigations.

    The victim was found with serious injuries at a house in Chepstow Close, Willenhall in the early hours of Friday.

    He died soon after.

    There's heavy congestion in the roadworks area, said Highways England.

    The NHS will be banned from buying fax machines from next month - and has been told by the government to phase out the machines entirely by 31 March 2020.

    In July, the Royal College of Surgeons revealed nearly 9,000 fax machines were in use across the NHS in England.

    Richard Kerr, who is the chair of the RCS's commission on the future of surgery, said the continued use of the outdated technology by the NHS was "absurd".

    One GP in the Midlands said they currently rely on a fax machine for requesting x-rays at local hospitals because of an ongoing IT problem which has not been fixed.

    A drop-in centre in Birmingham that has helped vulnerable women for more than 30 years, is facing closure.

    The Anawim charity in Balsall Heath supports more than 700 women a year struggling with homelessness, domestic violence and sexual exploitation.

    It relies entirely on donations, but funding is about to run out.

    Staff at the centre are trying to raise awareness of the work it does in a bid to attract sponsors.

    A Worcestershire sailor is making the long journey back to port after being rescued from the Pacific Ocean.

    Susie Goodall, from Bromsgrove, lost her mast after her boat went end-over-end in the non-stop solo round-the-world race and was rescued by a 40,000-tonne cargo ship on Friday.

    The founder of the Golden Globe Race has defended the event saying the sailors "control their own destiny".

    Don McIntyre said: "The master of any vessel at any time can return to any port and give up on any voyage," he said.

    Helicopters are going to be used to help the recovery of the Staffordshire Moorlands following the devastating fires earlier this year.

    Staffordshire Wildlife Trust will deposit stones to create mini dams on the landscape to help prevent rainwater eroding the damaged land further.

    The hope is that the work will help plants in the area to recover more quickly.

    A man continues to be questioned after being arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was stabbed to death.

    Yasir Hussain, from Lancashire, was pronounced dead on Central Drive in Lower Gornal, Dudley, on Tuesday.

    The man was arrested on Sunday and was taken into police custody for questioning.

    Nabeel Choudhary, 20, from Hope Street, West Bromwich, appeared at Walsall Magistrates' Court charged with murder on Saturday and was remanded in custody.

    Three other people who were arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday and a 21-year-old woman held on suspicion of assisting an offender have since been released pending further investigation.
