Work to restore a 130-year-old bandstand in Leamington Spa will be completed next month, after workmen correct a mistake which led to the undercroft being bricked up.
The Pump Room Gardens project, external was awarded nearly £1m by the National Lottery in 2016, but it was decided to seal up the brick-lined cellar, because of concerns about condensation affecting the joists.
The Friends of the Pump Room Gardens group said it was shocked when it heard the news as the bandstand is one of just a handful in the UK to have an undercroft - a brick-lined cellar used for storage.
Warwick District Council has apologised and said an access hatch has now been added to the Grade II listed bandstand.

The fine for littering in Worcester looks set to rise from £75 to £100, as part of a range of changes to fees and charges proposed by the city council.
The authority is also looking to increase the amount it charges visitors to The Commandery museum and the amount it charges for green waste collections would rise to £59 a year.
Under the proposals the cost of weddings at some council-owned properties would also rise, but car parking charges, animal licence renewals and the fee for removing bulky waste would all remain the same.
Councillors will vote on the plans on 19 February.

Plans to enlarge a Warwickshire secondary school have been approved, on the casting vote of a planning committee chairman.
Coleshill School, in Coleshill, will now get a new three-storey block including 12 extra classrooms to deal with an extra 227 pupils by 2022, which would take the total to 1,330.
Warwickshire County Council's planning committee was split, because of concerns about some pupils crossing four lanes of the busy A446 to get there.
The school says it has been working to persuade pupils to take alternative routes to the school and to lay on extra buses, so nobody has to walk across the A road.

The collision happened on the A483 near the Mile End roundabout at 11:57 and he was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment after being cut free from his vehicle.
