    A 47-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating a house fire at Eccleshall yesterday afternoon.

    Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said there were people inside the property on Newport Road, but they all managed to get out and no-one was hurt.

    Staffordshire police said it believed the fire was started deliberately and arrested the man on suspicion of arson.

    A man has appeared at Birmingham Crown Court today charged with murdering a woman in Droitwich.

    Martin Saberi, 53, from Wallington in Surrey, is yet to enter a plea and is due to reappear at the same court on 1 March.

    The body of 51-year-old Amy Griffiths was found at her home in Chalverton Court on 14 January.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow, external in Staffordshire, and suggested there could be some travel disruption later.

    There's already been white stuff in Shropshire and Herefordshire and the BBC Weather Watchers have been sharing their photos.

    These were taken at Oswestry and Broome in Shropshire, and Lyonshall in Herefordshire.

    Hill snow in the north of Staffordshire could cause travel disruption later today, the Met Office is warning, external.

    The yellow warning for snow comes into effect at 13:00 and remains in place until midnight.

    The Met Office says to expect some snow to also fall in Shropshire and Herefordshire.

    A West Midlands Metro tram named in memory of footballer Cyrille Regis has been unveiled at a special ceremony in Wednesbury near to where he made his name.

    The player is most closely associated with 1970s West Bromwich Albion and the tram bearing his name is expected to go into service on a route stopping at The Baggies' home, The Hawthorns.

    Cyrille Regis is also recognised as a pioneering player in the English game, paving the way for more black footballers during a period of racism on and off the terraces.

    He died in January 2018, aged 59.

    A man wanted by police has been arrested on the M5, Herefordshire officers say.

    According to a tweet, external, a crossbow, baseball bat and cannabis were found in the vehicle.

    He was arrested on suspicion of offences relating to the possession of those items.

    Police investigating the disappearance of a teenage mother in the Black Country 16 years ago say the case is not closed.

    Natalie Putt went missing in 2003, leaving behind her 11-week-old son. A body has never been found but police told an inquest opened in November that they believed her murdered.

    Det Sgt Angela Baggott has been giving evidence at resumed proceedings.

    She told the court: “It’s not a live investigation but it’s not closed and we will review it periodically."

    The hearing at Oldbury continues.

    Armed officers were called to Meir in Stoke-on-Trent following reports two people were seen with a gun at a property.

    Officers were deployed yesterday afternoon to the address on Pickford Place where a man, aged 29, and woman, aged 26, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

    Both are in custody, Staffordshire Police says.

    There was no risk to the public, according to the force.

    Six men have been arrested on suspicion of daubing trains in graffiti across the Midlands.

    The suspects, two from Nuneaton and four from Nottingham, have been released while officers carry out further enquiries.

    The incidents seem to have been "meticulously planned" the force says; "targeting certain areas and certain trains".

    It added: "The dangers of trespassing on the railway have not been considered nor the cost of cleaning up such vandalism."

    The deputy leader of Redditch Borough Council faces deselection by the Conservative Party following complaints about his behaviour.

    A formal complaint was made against David Bush over claims he was verbally aggressive towards the authority's chief executive at a meeting earlier this month.

    The dispute has since been resolved and Mr Bush says they have a good working relationship, but BBC Hereford and Worcester has been told other complaints about his conduct were made to the local Conservative Association and involve a longer period.

    Mr Bush is appealing the decision to deselect him and says he has an impeccable record after eight years of being a councillor.

    If he fails, he won't be able to stand for the Tories in May's elections.

    Two firearms have been seized after armed officers were called to reports of a man carrying a shotgun, external in Warwickshire.

    Officers say they're speaking to a man after police attended Rugby Road, Dunchurch, shortly after 17:15 on Thursday.

    A suspect was identified at a nearby property, police said.

    A fire behind a shopping centre in Crewe last night is believed to have been started deliberately, police say.

    Firefighters arrived at Market Centre to find wooden pallets alight and battled to stop it spreading to nearby shops.

    There are delays of about an hour on the M6 in Warwickshire due to an earlier crash and two broken-down vehicles.

    The carriageway fully reopened earlier but now two lanes have been closed between J2 and J3.

    Birmingham Airport is warning travelers to allow extra time.

    A man has died following a crash in Bournville last night after the car he was driving hit a tree.

    The 19-year-old was confirmed dead at the scene on Bristol Road South shortly after 22:30, the ambulance service said.

  17. Cyclist says she has 'no regrets' over failed tribunalpublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2019

    Ex-Great Britain cyclist Jess Varnish says she is "disappointed" but has "no regrets" over her failed attempt to prove she was an employee of British Cycling and UK Sport at tribunal.

    The decision means the 28-year-old Bromsgrove cyclist is highly unlikely to be able to sue both bodies for wrongful dismissal and sexual discrimination after being dropped by GB in 2016.

    "The tactics used against me at times were aggressive, my character was repeatedly called into question, my motives challenged," she said.

    In a statement Varnish, who says that British Cycling's control over her made it akin to her employer, said the defence to her challenge at an employment tribunal didn't "uphold the Olympic ideals, rather one that embraced the win-at-all-costs mentality for which they'd recently been criticised".

    British Cycling had argued that her deal with them was more like a university grant.
