    A family returning from holiday found they had no seats once they had boarded their plane and spent part of the flight sitting on the floor.

    Despite having boarding passes, the Taylors found empty spaces where their seats should have been.

    The family, from Alcester, Warwickshire, was flying from Menorca to Birmingham with TUI airlines.

    The Civil Aviation Authority, which is looking into the matter, says passengers must not be left unseated during any stage of the flight.

  2. Happy 130th birthday Birminghampublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    Birmingham is celebrating 130 years since it was officially granted city status.

    To mark the occasion, a special film will be projected onto the Council House in Victoria Square, telling the stories of the people living in the city.

    Audiences will be treated to a glimpse of Birmingham’s past and present.

    West Midlands mayor Andy Street is meeting unions and bosses at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) today to discuss the loss of 4,500 jobs.

    Most of the cuts announced last week will be in office roles as the company wants to simplify its management structure.

    JLR says it wants to create a leaner, more resilient organisation for the future.

    Overrunning road works are causing delays on Walsgrave Road in Coventry, between Longfellow Road and Dane Road.

    Outbound traffic is being diverted via Longfellow Road and Hipswell Highway.

    The road remains open inbound, but is restricted to a single lane.

    Drivers are being advised to avoid it if possible.

  5. Man due in court after airport firearm arrestpublished at 07:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2019

    A man arrested as he arrived at Birmingham Airport is due in court today charged with possessing a firearm.

    Thomas Kavanagh, 51, from Tamworth, Staffordshire, was detained on Saturday as part of a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation into the supply of drugs and firearms in the UK and Ireland.

    Two men, aged 20 and 19, who were arrested alongside Mr Kavanagh, have been released under investigation.

    Mr Kavanagh is in custody and is due to appear at North Staffordshire Magistrates Court later.

    Prime Minister Theresa May is making a last-ditch attempt to persuade MPs to back her Brexit deal as Tuesday's key Commons vote looms closer.

    Speaking to factory workers in Stoke-on-Trent later, she'll warn that Parliament is more likely to block Brexit than let the UK leave without a deal.

    Mrs May will add that trust in politics will suffer "catastrophic harm" if the referendum result is not implemented.

    During her visit to the West Midlands, she'll say: "As we have seen over the last few weeks, there are some in Westminster who would wish to delay or even stop Brexit and who will use every device available to them to do so."
