    Investigators are working to discover the cause of this fire at a bungalow in Herefordshire last night.

  3. Wrongly convicted postman loses compensation casepublished at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2019

    A man who was convicted of the attempted rape of a woman outside a nightclub in Redditch has lost his fight for compensation after being denied by the Supreme Court.

    Former postman Victor Nealon, who is in his 50s and originally from Dublin, was convicted a year after the 1996 attack and spent 17 years in jail before being set free on appeal.

    He had previously been denied compensation by the Justice Secretary and the High Court, but he had attempted to argue those refusals were "incompatible" with human rights.

    The Supreme Court decided by a majority of five to two that the appeal should be dismissed.

    It could be several years before a town has its swimming pool reopened, according to council discussions.

    Kidsgrove Sports Centre shut in 2017 needing £2.4m of repairs.

    But a finance scrutiny committee heard Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is not planning to invest in the pool there for at least three years.

    The council is working with a community group to get the venue back into use.

    The group's aiming to get the centre's gym and sports hall reopened by the summer and is chasing grants to reopen the pool.

    A parking warden assaulted over a £35 ticket in Stoke-on-Trent says it's too stressful to return to his job.

    Daniel Fairclough was attacked by Grant Saville in August after issuing a ticket for misuse of a disabled parking bay.

    Saville, of Weston Road, Weston Coyney, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was jailed for 20 months.

    Mr Fairclough said the attack knocked out three of his teeth.

    A businessman has taken to social media to reassure customers that reports of his death have been exaggerated.

    The blinds salesman left messages on Facebook, external and Instagram to reassure customers he was still alive after rumours he died at Christmas.

    Bob Walker, who runs Bob the Blindman in Merrington, Shropshire, said his wife received calls from people offering condolences when another blinds salesman from the county died in December.

    His online messages said: "I appreciate news travels fast nowadays and Fake News is rife, but any reports of my demise are false".

    NHS trusts could "quickly run out of vital medicine" in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the chief executive of a leading hospital group has warned.

    Dr David Rosser of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) said that despite NHS stockpiling, shortages would likely occur due to "unprecedented" distribution challenges.

    Dr Rosser made the warning in a paper presented to the UHB board , externallast week.

    Ten recommendations were made by an independent review into the 2016 death of 74-year-old rough sleeper Cardon Banfield.

    They included offering staff who work with rough sleepers more training and better ways for the public to report the locations of tents and squats.

    A public inquiry is due to start today into health and safety breaches by the company operating a bus that crashed into a city centre branch of Sainsbury's, killing two.

    The double decker's driver Kailash Chander had been driving dangerously when he mistook the accelerator for the brake in Coventry, a trial of facts concluded last year. He was judged unfit to plead or stand trial over the 2015 deaths of a passenger and pedestrian.

    Midland Red (South) Ltd was fined £2.3m after admitting safety breaches.

    The hearing will be held at the Office of the Traffic Commissioner (West Midlands).

    Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is to become the main centre for emergency care in Shropshire in a controversial move that effectively sees A&E at Telford's Princess Royal downgraded.

    Health officials approved plans at a meeting last night that prompted angry scenes from the public, some of whom met the decision with shouts of "shame on you".

    Among campaigners' complaints is that some patients in the county will now have further to travel for treatment. The Telford site becomes an urgent care centre under the reorganisation carried out under the Future Fit banner.

    Hospital bosses insist it's the right decision, saying the overhaul is needed to make sure services are sustainable for the future.
