Since 2013, councils have been able to add an extra 50% on to bills of homes empty for at least two years as part of the Empty Property Council Tax Premium.

New legislation means that those bills can now be doubled.

Across the Stratford district there are currently just over 200 properties which would qualify for the premium, a meeting on Monday heard.

The current council tax exemptions, which include properties of those in hospital or prison or those which are on the market for genuine sale, will still apply.

The on-going dispute between unions representing bin workers and Birmingham City Council has been discussed by members of its cabinet.

At the meeting, members agreed to make a fresh offer to Unite and Unison - who councillors said are also pursuing litigation - when they meet later.

But they said if this was not accepted by the close of business today, it would reaffirm the council's decision to take an injunction "to prevent further unlawful industrial action".

Unite members have been working to rule since 29 December over a payment given to GMB members and are set to strike twice a week from 19 February.

It comes as the council announced city bins would be collected fortnightly from Monday to ensure "reliability of service" until the dispute is resolved.

We have therefore taken the decision to extend the step-in until the summer, when the position will be reviewed. This will provide time for the changes we are making to bed in, for improvements to gather pace, and for a conclusion to be reached on the longer-term future of the prison.
