This increase, which was announced earlier this month, is on top of the increase of 100 officers announced in September last year, which will see 40 based with the Shropshire and Telford divisions and the other 60 based with divisions in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Parliament has been asked to "set an example to the world" by making the eating of dog meat illegal.

North Herefordshire MP Bill Wiggin conceded there is no evidence that dogs are being eaten by people in the UK, but it remains legal and he wants to encourage other countries, like China, to stop.

    Bill Wiggin

Introducing his dog meat bill today, he said: "Thirty million dogs are eaten every year around the world. More than 10 million of these are killed in China alone."

And he said he wanted the UK to follow the example of the USA, Germany and Austria which already have bans.

He asked for his bill to return to the Commons on 22 March, but it is unlikely to become law because of a lack of parliamentary time.
