Care bosses in Walsall have called for local authorities across the country to introduce council tax exemptions for former looked after children.

    Wallsall Town Hall

Care leavers up to the age of 25 who live in Walsall are given a 100% discount on council tax as a way of providing support and helping them establish stable home lives.

But the relief doesn’t currently extend to Walsall care leavers who move out of the borough and the authority is assessing the possibility of extending the scheme to those who live outside the town.

  19. Birmingham bin strike: 'Rubbish piling up since Christmas'published at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2019

Some residents in Birmingham say they haven't had recycling collections in the city "for weeks", as a result of a work to rule by bin workers in the city.

Collections have moved to fortnightly, which the council said was to ensure "reliability of service" until the dispute is resolved.

"We have not now had a recycling collection for six weeks so a fortnightly collection would actually be an improvement," said David Evans in Solihull.

Luke Service said his street has been "covered in rubbish" with bins "over-flowing" since before official strike action began.

He said his recycling had not been taken since 18 December, meaning he still has waste from Christmas piling up.

    Bins

"There's rubbish all over the street as people leave it next to the bins and then it gets blown by the weather," Mr Service, who lives in the Stechford area of Birmingham, said.

"This has even led to us having rats and foxes in our street at various points.

"It's a tough situation, but there needs to be some sort of compromise."
