  1. Force refers itself over arrest film on social mediapublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    A video of officers arresting a man has "generated concern across communities", said West Midlands Police, prompting the force to voluntarily refer itself for investigation., external

    The video clip posted on social media, shows "edited footage" of officers called to assist after a man "became violent" and "assaulted a doctor with a metal crutch" during a mental health assessment in Sandwell, the force said.

    "The full body worn video of the response shows the man attack the officers with his walking sticks, injuring three of them", it said.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) will now decide whether the use of force was proportionate.

    The man, who was arrested on suspicion of assault, did not receive any injuries and is receiving treatment in a mental health facility, police added.

    A jockey on his way to Cheltenham is one of those caught up on the M42, after a lorry overturned blocking the southbound carriageway.

    Tommy Dowson, due to ride Lady Buttons in the Mare's Hurdle at 16:10 tweeted , externalhe'd been stuck on the motorway for over an hour.

    The road remains closed near Tamworth, but trapped traffic is now being released past the scene, between J10 and J11.

  3. Funeral for four children killed in house firepublished at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    A funeral is taking place this lunchtime for the four children who died in a Stafford house fire last month.

    The service at Stafford Crematorium is private, but people in the town were invited to put a teddy bear in their window, to show their support.

    Ahead of the service, a procession was due to pass through Highfields estate and then on through Silkmore Lane, Radford Bank and Baswich Lane to the crematorium.

    Riley Holt, eight, Keegan Unitt, six, Tilly Rose Unitt, four, and Olly Unitt, three, all died in the blaze on 5 February.

    Staffordshire's chief fire officer, Becci Bryant, said the fire was the "most tragic" case she had faced in her 28 years' service.

    "The magnitude of losing four children under the age of 10 is extraordinary," she said.

  5. Driver treated after overturned lorry closes M42published at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    The driver of a lorry that's overturned and is blocking the M42 near Tamworth, is being treated at the scene, the ambulance service said.

    The southbound carriageway has been closed between J10 and J11 since 10:00.

    Trapped traffic is being released past the scene, said Highways England.

    Birmingham City is promising stricter controls in parts of its St Andrew's ground after a supporter evaded security and attacked Aston Villa's Jack Grealish on Sunday.

    Paul Mitchell, of Rubery, Worcestershire, ran on to the pitch and hit Grealish from behind about 10 minutes into Sunday's game.

    The club said it had begun reviewing all of its stewarding, safety and security procedures "as a matter of high importance".

    "We will be putting into place extra measures at our stadium designed to help ensure the safety of players, as well as supporters," a spokesman said.

    Mitchell, 27, admitted assault and encroachment on to the pitch at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Monday, and has been jailed for 14 weeks.

    The family of a murdered footballer, shot dead in an apparent gangland shooting, are "surprised and excited" at the announcement the case is to be re-investigated.

    Kevin Nunes was 20 when he was killed in a shooting in Pattingham, Staffordshire.

    Five men jailed in 2008 had their murder convictions quashed after police failings in the case were uncovered.

    Mr Nunes' partner, Leanne Williams, was pregnant with their son when he was killed. Their son is now 16 years old.

    Announcing the new investigation Staffordshire's Chief Constable Gareth Morgan apologised to Mr Nunes's family.

    "I am particularly sorry that the family of Kevin have not received justice for his death. I know they have been let down."

    Manchester City Football Club are setting up a compensation scheme for victims of historical child sexual abuse.

    Millions of pounds will be offered to victims of the former City and Crewe Alexandra youth coach, Barry Bennell.

    Last year, former youth coach Barry Bennell was convicted of 43 charges relating to 12 former junior players between 1979 and 1990 during his time working for City and Crewe Alexandra and was jailed for 31 years.

    Another 86 people have since come forward to make complaints of abuse against him.

    Meanwhile, allegations against John Broome, who was also from the club's youth set-up in the 1960s, are being investigated. Broome has now died and no links with Bennell have been established.

    A new investigation into the murder of 20-year-old footballer Kevin Nunes, who was shot dead in 2002, is to be carried out.

    The announcement by the chief constable of Staffordshire Police, Gareth Morgan, follows an independent review of the case by Merseyside Police which has made more than 60 recommendations.

    The semi-professional footballer was shot dead in an apparent gangland killing.

    Five men who were jailed in 2008 had their murder convictions quashed on appeal after serious failings in the original investigation were uncovered.

    A main road in Bromsgrove was closed for a time last night for crews to deal with a "significant" blaze at a derelict pub.

  17. Crash causing hour-long delays on M5published at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2019

    A crash involving a lorry and two cars has closed one lane of the M5 northbound in Worcestershire.

    Traffic was held for a while this morning to move vehicles on to the hard shoulder after the incident between J7 and J6.

    One lane of the southbound carriageway is also closed, with six miles of queuing traffic being reported in the area.

    A derelict school has been destroyed by a severe fire overnight with up to 60 firefighters batting to stop it spreading to adjoining buildings.

    Residents living near Friar Park Road in Wednesbury were advised to keep windows and doors shut as crews dealt with the blaze at the Manor high school site.

    Crews are still at the site damping down after initially being called to the derelict building shortly after midnight.

    The main three-storey building collapsed after 100% of the 60m x 30m site was involved in the blaze, said the fire service.
