  15. Ballot boxes verified before countingpublished at 23:28 British Summer Time 2 May 2019

    Allen Cook
    BBC News

For those wondering why, with the polls closing at 22:00, we aren't already getting results, it's not a simple case of counting the votes as they arrive.

    Verification in Coventry

There are checks that the number of ballot papers in each box matches the number of ballot papers issued.

Assuming they do match, we get on with the counting, but if they don't, people try to work out why or recount the ballot box at least twice until they get the same number of ballot papers on two consecutive counts. , external

Which means we're probably not going to get results until about midnight , externalat the earliest.

  16. When will we get the results?published at 23:23 British Summer Time 2 May 2019

    Allen Cook
    BBC News

Right... We've told you where people are voting, reminded you of those on a knife-edge, and shared the view of our political editor, Patrick Burns.

But let's get down to the key question, when are we expecting results?

Well, with the polls closed, some of our councils are already beginning to count while others will wait until tomorrow.

    Ballot boxes

Over the next few hours, we're expecting 11 councils to reveal their results. Let's recap here:

    • Coventry City Council
    • Dudley Borough Council
    • North Warwickshire Borough Council
    • Rugby Borough Council
    • Sandwell Borough Council
    • Stoke-On-Trent City Council
    • Tamworth Borough Council
    • Telford And Wrekin Council
    • Walsall Borough Council
    • Wolverhampton City Council

  17. Tight battle for power in Dudleypublished at 23:12 British Summer Time 2 May 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    George Makin

One of the closest battles is for control of Dudley Borough Council.

Things are tight there - of the 72 seats, the Conservative Party has 35 to Labour's 36.

Although people have only been voting on a third of the seats, one gain or loss could see a swing in power.

Dudley Borough Council result in 2018

There's some time to go before any results are announced, but a lot of eyes are on the Norton ward held by the borough's sole independent - it's been a target for both Labour and Conservatives.

  18. Single gain could swing power in Walsallpublished at 22:57 British Summer Time 2 May 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    Gurdip Thandi

A swing of just one seat could see overall control of Walsall Council change tonight.

The first ballot boxes have arrived and counting of the votes has started - a third of seats are up for grabs this year.

    Ballot box arriving in Walsall

The Conservatives rule things as the largest block, but it's a minority administration. They hold 30 of the 60 seats on the authority while Labour has 28 and the Liberal Democrats have two.

Labour and Liberal Democrats ruled as a coalition before the Tories took control in May 2018. Should they wish to continue the pact, a single gain could see them back in power.
