  8. Should JLR combine with Peugeot's owner?published at 09:25 British Summer Time 20 May 2019

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

Does Jaguar Land Rover have the financial resources to compete with its bigger German rivals - particularly as all car makers are having to invest in electric and self-driving technology?

Audi is more than three times the size of JLR and BMW is four times the size, points out Matthias Holweg from Said Business School.

There has been speculation that JLR might be bought by PSA Group, the owners of Peugeot and Citroen.

"That could create the scale they might need," said Professor Holweg.

"Tata Motors has been a very benevolent corporate parent but it doesn't offer the synergies that Volkswagen offers to Audi or BMW generates by owning Mini and sharing parts."

"Peugeot PSA essentially doesn't have a strong luxury brand so there could be quite some synergies to be developed here."

The important thing to watch is the performance of the car-making operations, which have been undergoing a major revamp, including cutting 4,000 jobs.
