    There are now five flood alerts across the West Midlands as the rain continued to fall today.

    In several of these cases, the agency's said river levels are continuing to rise and low-lying roads and farmland could flood.

    Yellow warnings of rain remain in place across the West Midlands until Thursday.

    A stained glass window's been smashed during a break-in at a church and could cost around £10,000 to repair, a charity's said.

    The smashed window dates back to the 1500s and depicts the son of Emperor Manual I.

    The damage happened on Sunday night as an intruder got into St Mary's, Shrewsbury, external, the Churches Conservation Trust said.

    Staff at a closure-threatened children's hospice have climbed Snowdon, external as part of fund-raising efforts to try and stop it shutting.

    It was announced last week Acorns in Walsall, which looked after 200 children in the last year, could shut at the beginning of October.

    The charity blamed a lack of funds and said care would be moved to Acorns sites in Birmingham and Worcester.

  7. Officer cleared of assault to face gross misconduct hearingpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

    A police officer cleared of assault after being accused of hitting a man over the head with a baton after a high-speed pursuit is still expected to face a gross misconduct hearing.

    PC Sunil Narr, of West Midlands Police, denied assault occasioning bodily harm over the blow to Joshua Ward in Hillfields, Coventry in August 2017.

    The jury at Birmingham Crown Court accepted he was aiming at Mr Ward's shoulder and accidentally hit his head.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said a file was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service, who made the decision to charge PC Narr with assault.

    The IOPC investigation also concuded an independent tribunal could find the officer had breached standards of professional behaviour during the incident.

    "It's expected that a gross misconduct hearing will be organised by the force in due course," the IOPC said.

    The driver had left the scene by the time police arrived and they are trying to track him down.

  11. Climate change protest held ahead of council meetingpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

    The campaign group Extinction Rebellion has been staging a demonstration in Birmingham city centre.

    About 50 protestors presented a petition to the city council, calling on it to act to tackle climate change, and make the city carbon-neutral by 2025.

    The proposal is being discussed at a full council meeting.

    The unemployment rate in the West Midlands in the three months to April fell to 5.0%, according to new data., external

    The Office for National Statistics said 145,000 were out of work in the region, down 4,000 on the previous quarter.

    But its figures also showed 11,000 fewer people were employed over the period, compared to the previous three months.

    Overall, the UK’s unemployment rate remained at 3.8%, and has not been lower since the October to December 1974 period.
