    Singer Ellie Goulding has picked up an honorary degree from the university she dropped out of 11 years ago.

    The singer, from Kington in Herefordshire, apologised for informing the University of Kent by email saying she quit her drama degree at the end of her second year to combine gigging with two part-time jobs.

    In her speech, she revealed she found it "hard to fit in" at university, while "struggling" to combine coursework, part-time jobs and "stock up on baked beans and pot noodles".

    Three men have been charged with conspiring to kill a man shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Birmingham, police say.

    Dante Mullings, 23, was found fatally injured in Ladywood, Birmingham on May 7, and pronounced dead at the scene.

    He was one of three men in a car parked in St Vincent Road West when a vehicle pulled up alongside and shots fired, said West Midlands Police.

    Ihsaan Bernard, aged 20 from Anerley Road in Kingstanding, and 23-year-old Omami Bernard-Sewell, of no fixed address, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court this morning and were remanded into custody.

    Dior Jackson, aged 20 from Wadington Avenue in Great Barr, is set to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Friday.

    A dad has turned up to do the school pick-up in a tank this afternoon - on his sons' final day of term.

    For the past 14 years, Ben Kaye, from Shropshire, has been restoring a Scorpion tank and he says he hopes it's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

    Mr Kaye said he bought it from a friend a month after he got married and he had to take out a loan to afford it.

    His two boys were up last night at his workshop, helping make the final preparations.

  18. Man jailed after attacking and dumping man on doorsteppublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 18 July 2019

    A man has been jailed for beating a 70 year-old man before "leaving him for dead" on a doorstep.

    Gurmukh Sing, 70, was found outside the White Road, Smethwick, address of Palvinder Hayre on 23 November and was taken to hospital where he died.

    Earlier this month the court heard Mr Singh had suffered 19 rib fractures, along with a fracture to his sternum and an area around the throat. His right lung was also punctured.

    The pair had been drinking together for most of the day before and during the morning before the fatal attack took place, said West Midlands Police.

    Hayre, 51, had denied murder, but was found guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court today and told he would serve a minimum of 19 years less one day in prison.

    A project to improve water quality in the Rea Brook in Shropshire has been awarded £300,000 by a European Union fund.

    The Reaction Project aims to improve the environment for fish and quality of the water for farmers, who use it for their animals.
