    A man from Coventry has been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in Rugby last week.

    The girl was attacked in an alleyway off Overslade Lane at about 19:45 on Wednesday 17 July.

    Mujdat Altuntas, 28, of Edmund Road appeared at Leamington Spa Magistrates' Court today and has been remanded to appear at crown court on 22 August.

    A gym and spa at The Wave opened to the public this morning.

    The water park itself remains closed, with an opening date yet to be set, said the city council.

  3. Volvo recalls cars due to fire riskpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 22 July 2019

    Carmaker Volvo has announced that it is recalling 507,353 cars worldwide after investigations identified a problem with plastic intake manifolds - a device that sits on top of the engine in a car distributing air to each cylinder.

    Volvo told the BBC that in "very rare cases", the plastic engine intake manifold was known to melt and deform, sometimes even causing a fire in the engine bay.

    The recall affects 69,616 cars in the UK, and Volvo is currently working on a fix for the problem.

    "We are taking full responsibility to ensure the highest quality and safety standards of our cars," said a spokesman for Volvo.

    "We will do our utmost to perform this action without any unnecessary inconvenience to our customers, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused and are grateful for our customers’ cooperation."

  4. Castle dig set to reveal hidden historypublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 22 July 2019

    An archaeological dig is starting today, expected to reveal the hidden history of Shrewsbury Castle for the first time.

    Dr Nigel Baker described the site as the "best-preserved Norman motte and bailey castle" in any town in the UK.

    Shropshire Council says the excavation is set to last until 2 August , externalas the team dig in the inner-bailey.

    It follows a geophysics survey which revealed a large stone structure, possibly with a tower, lies just 16cm below the ground.

    It's not the first time geophysics equipment has been used at the site. A survey in 2000 revealed the remains of at least three buildings.

  5. Sainsbury's trials pizza delivery servicepublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 22 July 2019

    A new pizza delivery service is being trialled by Sainsbury's at five stores across the country.

    Customers will also be able to order snacks and drinks during the pilot which will run at the supermarket's Selly Oak store in Birmingham.

    It's the first time a UK supermarket has offered hot takeaways through Deliveroo, it said.

    The trial will also run at stores in Cambridge, East Sussex, and London.

    A toddler has been taken to hospital after being bitten by a dog by a canal.

    The ambulance service was called to Hoo Mill Lane, Great Haywood, Staffordshire, yesterday afternoon.

    The 22-month-old girl was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital and paramedics said her injuries were minor.

    The body of a woman has been found in a canal stretch near Atherstone, Warwickshire.

    Specialist paramedics helped search the water after being called to Grenton shortly before 11:30 on Saturday, the ambulance service said.

    The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was confirmed dead at the scene.

    The incident is not being being treated as suspicious, said Warwickshire Police.

    Police said they had reports of the objects being launched from the footbridge over the A34 on Friday morning and Saturday evening.

  13. Shooting: 'Parents afraid to let their children out'published at 10:26 British Summer Time 22 July 2019

    The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has acknowledged that some parents "feel afraid to let their children out at night" in the wake of a shooting in Coventry.

    A 15-year-old boy is being treated for potentially life-changing injuries after he was shot outside a McDonald's on Saturday night.

    PCC David Jamieson said government funding to tackle youth violence had allowed "more officers on the ground in Coventry," but that "it's still not enough".

    Police said there would be an increased presence in the city centre.

    Detectives are examining CCTV and have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to contact them.

  15. Two attacked in 'road rage' incidentpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 22 July 2019

    A woman was attacked and a man seriously injured during a "road rage" incident in Stoke-on-Trent.

    A driver pulled over on Bridge Road, Trent Vale on Saturday evening and approached the 23-year-old woman, who had just crossed the road, before assaulting her.

    A 54-year-old man intervened, and he too was assaulted suffering serious facial injuries, said Staffordshire Police.

    The incident happened at about 18:30 when the road was busy, police said, and officers are keen to hear from witnesses.

    We're in for some warm days and sticky nights.

    The south of England will see the hottest temperatures, but in the West Midlands we're still likely to see it reach 30C in the next few days and even higher in some areas.
