    The International Cheese Awards are going ahead today, but the Nantwich Show has had to be cancelled, because of the heavy rain.

    The organisers said the ground had become too dangerous for vehicles and the forecast didn't offer any hope of an improvement.

    They aren't going to reschedule the agricultural show for later in the year and are refunding tickets.

    The fire service has also been out to deal with flooded properties in Staffordshire, with one farm at Astbury reporting being under a few feet of water.

  2. Man released following discovery of remains in septic tankpublished at 09:26 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    Police investigating the discovery of female human remains in a septic tank have released a man under investigation.

    An 86-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of bones in Kempsey, Worcestershire, on 12 July during a routine emptying of the tank, police said.

    Officers said the deceased was "likely to be" local woman Brenda Venables, who went missing in 1982.

    Mrs Venables, 48, was reported missing by her farmer husband David from the couple's then home in Bestmans Lane, Kempsey.

    The investigation was ongoing and officers were exploring "various lines of enquiry", West Mercia Police said.

  3. Floods causing disruptionpublished at 09:13 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    Flooding is causing considerable disruption this morning, but it seems to be limited to certain areas, with most of the Midlands unaffected.

    Here's the state of play.

    Flood warnings are in place for:

    • Coleshill,in Warwickshire
    • Foston Brook at Foston and nearby at Marchington Brook, in Marchington, Staffordshire
    • River Anker at Weddington, in Nuneaton
    • River Hamps at Waterhouses, near Cauldon, in Staffordshire
    • River Tean near Checkley in the Staffordshire Moorlands

    The Environment Agency says homes and businesses could be flooded. More heavy rain is expected and river levels are expected to rise in some areas.

    Less serious flood alerts are also in place for:

    • Burton Trent
    • Lower Dove, including Lower Dove Brooks
    • River Blithe and River Swarbourn at Blythe Bridge
    • Middle Tame, at Water Orton
    • River Anker abetween Nuneaton and Tamworth and River Sence between Temple Mill and Ratcliffe Culey
    • River Churnet and River Tean near Leek
    • River Cole in Warwickshire
    • River Sow and River Penk near Penkridge
    • River Stour and Smestow Brook in the Black Country and South Staffordshire
    • River Stour in Worcestershire
    • Rugeley Trent
    • The River Trent in Stoke and Stone
  4. Land to be fenced off to prevent fly-tippingpublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    A fence is going to be erected around a piece of land in Wolverhampton which has been blighted for years by fly-tipping.

    The City of Wolverhampton Council said mattresses, furniture and rubbish had been dumped on the area around an electricity sub-station and house on Wanderers Avenue in Blakenhall.

    The council decided to erect the 2m high fence after being unable to find out the owners of the affected site.

  5. Hospital has £42.5m overspend despite cutbackspublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    The County Hospital in Hereford overspent by £42.5m last year, the Wye Valley NHS Trust has revealed.

    It said that was despite cutting its spending by £10m in the same period.

    The trust says it has been working to reduce the use of agency doctors and nurses and introducing measures to retain staff and improve productivity.

  6. Floods close village farm shoppublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    A village farm shop and other facilities are closed after flooding that left water about a couple of feet deep.

    A farm shop, coffee shop and butcher’s as well as "lots of units", caravan storage and motor homes are shut at Glebe Farm in Astbury, near Congleton in Cheshire.

    Owner Lesley Lomas said the water was up to her "husband's thighs" and she was "absolutely gutted".

    "We've built the business up over the last 10 years. [It's been] doing alright. We've got to clean it all out and start all over again," she said.

    Heavy rain has caused flooding in parts of Cheshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

    "We're just in a little village in Cheshire. My husband has lived here for 50 years and has never seen anything like this," she said.

  7. West Mids mayor declared 'Curry King' over visa stancepublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    The curry industry has thanked the West Midlands mayor for his support and called him the "true curry king".

    Andy Street has lobbied the government to ask for a relaxation of visa laws which state chefs working in a restaurant that offers a takeaway service will only be granted a visa if they earn more than £35,000 a year.

    Restaurant owners say this restricts their ability to bring in skilled chefs.

    The restriction has now been recommended for removal as part of a government review.

    An independent review into a major shake-up of hospital services in Shropshire will be submitted to the government today.

    Under the Future Fit programme Telford’s A&E department would be downgraded to an urgent care centre, with emergency cases dealt with in Shrewsbury instead.

    Telford & Wrekin Council asked the health secretary Matt Hancock to intervene in the decision earlier this year.

  9. Harry Potter first edition 'could fetch up to £30,000'published at 07:26 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    A first edition copy of the first Harry Potter novel - bought by a Staffordshire office worker for just £1 - could fetch up to £30,000 when it goes under the hammer later, an auction house says.

    It was part of a collection bought from Staffordshire Libraries 20 years ago - for the owner's family to read on holiday.

    The book had been stored in a cupboard and its value was only discovered when auctioneers were asked to look over the collection.

    The first edition book can be identified by two typographical errors, including "philosopher's" being spelt as "philospher's", Hanson's Auctioneers says.

  10. Landslip and heavy rain causing disruption to rail servicespublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 31 July 2019

    A landslip has occurred and as a result all lines are blocked between Chester and Crewe, the National Rail Enquiries website reports., external

    Train services through these stations may cancelled or revised and disruption is expected until the end of the day.

    Also, heavy rain is flooding the railway between Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe / Stoke-On-Trent resulting in both lines being blocked.

    Services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or diverted. Disruption is expected until 09:30.

    The New Saints have been praised for their organisation and hard work by the manager of their Champions League opponents, FC Copenhagen.

    The Oswestry-based side lost their home leg 2-0 to Stale Solbakken's men, but he said he was surprised by their fitness and added "when you lose the ball, they have great counterattacking players".

    They play the second leg at the Parken stadium tomorrow evening.

    Solbakken had a brief spell as the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers and said: "It started well, but gradually we came into trouble."

    He's now focused on taking FC Copenhagen to the group stages of European competitions.
