    Significant rises in tree planting in the UK "need to happen quickly" if other targets to cut carbon are not met, government advisers have warned.

    Overall tree planting rates would need to more than double to combat rising temperatures and climate change, according to figures.

    Between 2010 and 2018, the government funded about 15 million trees in England.

  5. Events surrounding motorcyclist find 'unclear'published at 12:52 British Summer Time 30 July 2019

    A motorcyclist found lying in the road by passers-by last night was declared dead at the scene.

    He was discovered on Banbury Road in Bishops Tachbrook, Warwickshire, shortly before 22:00.

    But the circumstances surrounding the discovery are not yet known.

    "It's not clear what happened," said the ambulance service.

    A factory in Stoke-on-Trent that makes 250,000 cherry bakewells a day is featuring on BBC Two this evening.

    Presenter Gregg Wallace visited the site for the Inside the Factory series to meet the team of 12 who place each cherry on the top by hand.

    The programme, which is being broadcast at 20:00, also visits the town of Bakewell, where the original tarts were made.

    A man who died after being stabbed outside a Walsall pub has been described as "the life of his family," with "a massive heart".

    Shane Mayer, 21, from Wolverhampton, was injured outside Gabba's Bar on Forge Road, Darlaston, on Wednesday night and died on Saturday.

    In a statement released by police, Shane's family said "the ache in our hearts is unexplainable; we are all broken now forever".

    Two men, both aged 18, were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of murder – one has been released on police bail and the other released without charge.

    A 19-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been released on police bail.

    A 21-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray has been released while inquiries continue.

    The human remains found in a septic tank at Kempsey in Worcestershire are "likely to be that of missing Brenda Venables", West Mercia Police says.

    An investigation into the discovery earlier this month is still on-going and detectives are waiting for DNA test results, but the force says "the general circumstances" lead it to its view on the identity.

    She has been missing since 1982.

    An 86-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

    An 86-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the discovery of human remains in a septic tank in Worcestershire.

    The bones - those of a female - were discovered in Kempsey on 12 July.

    Nearly half of young LGBT people who are left homeless after coming out are from religious backgrounds.

    That's according to research by the Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT), which supports young people who are at risk of homelessness.

    For Dr Nazim Mahmood, the pain of not being accepted by his parents ended in the most devastating way.

    Five years ago he took his own life , externalwhen his Birmingham family told him to "seek a cure" after coming out as gay, because they considered homosexuality a disease.

    There are now hour-long delays on the M1 which is closed from J18 to J16 on the southbound carriageway.

    An investigation is being carried out after three lorries crashed shortly before midnight.

    The M45 eastbound in Warwickshire also remains closed from A45 to M1 with diversions in operation through Daventry.
