A £100,000 fund which was raised a decade ago is finally going to be put to use by Stone Town Council.
The council raised the money by increasing it's council tax precept by 50% in 2009, the equivalent of £17 for a Band D home, because it wanted money to buy Crown Wharf and prevent unwanted development there.
It was unable to buy the site, but now plans to use the money to set up a heritage centre on land next door.
Crown Wharf was bought by Market Drayton-based Joules brewery and the council wants to convert the neighbouring fire station into a space for exhibitions, meetings and classes, with a cafe.
It says the building would be community-run and that volunteers have already come forward.
