    The Coventry councillor responsible for regeneration has defended plans to spend more than £1m of its own money to clear a site in the city for a new luxury hotel.

    Jim O'Boyle said: "It's actually a risk that we don't do this, because we won't have beds available for people who come into the city."

    Mr O'Boyle did accept that all investments are a risk, but added: "People have been telling me for years and years and years we've not had a decent hotels in our city centre for 40 or 50 years."

    Indigo Hotels have been lined up to build on the Friargate site and the money will be used prepare it for use.

    Mr O'Boyle said it was difficult to bring in private investors interested in projects like this.

    Planners have rejected an application to change the use of the Newtown Inn on the A4103 Worcester Road and say the pub is an asset of community value, with no evidence it's not viable as business.

    The Campaign for Real Ale is now calling on the owners to sell the building to someone who wishes to run it as a pub.

    Police want to trace two people who are thought to have been hit by a car in Redditch town centre yesterday afternoon.

    Officers believe they were walking on Unicorn Hill when they were hit by a black BMW which was being driven erratically.

    The pair left the scene without talking to the emergency services.

    West Mercia Police also want to talk to a woman who was seen speaking to the occupants of the vehicle at traffic lights near the top of the hill.

    Campaigners fighting to save the outdoor swimming pool in Kenilworth say they will continue their battle.

    Tomorrow, Warwick District Council is set to sign off plans to replace the facility with a new indoor pool as part of a revamp of the Abbey Fields Leisure Centre, but the Lido Campaign Group has its own alternative proposals.

    The group says it will attend the meeting and challenge the council's predictions of the environmental benefits and increased swimming numbers if the redevelopment goes ahead.

    And it has its own designs, drawn up by local resident Thomas Bates, on display at Kenilworth Books in Talisman Square.

    Those plans also include a plunge pool, play fountain and paddling pool.

    Police officers say a burglary suspect's lucky they arrested him today as he turned out to have a potentially fatal infection.

    Officers in Walsall made the arrest and called an ambulance as they said he was clearly unwell and turned out to have sepsis. , external

    Dubbed the "hidden killer", sepsis is triggered by infections but develops because of an over-reaction by the immune system and can lead to death.

    Firefighters were called to the Telford Tennis Centre at Wrockwardine Wood earlier, only to discover the fire alarm had been set off by a freak accident.

    A badly aimed shot had caused a tennis ball to hit one of the fire alarms, setting it off.
