    Staffordshire Police have confirmed the motorcyclist who died in a crash at Cold Meece in Staffordshire yesterday morning was an off-duty police officer.

    The force said Luke Van De Sande, who was aged 28 and from north Staffordshire, died when his bike left the road near to Pillstone Cottages on Swynnerton Road.

    A bid is being made to bring a railway station back to Pontrilas in Herefordshire.

    The previous one closed nearly 100 years ago and a campaign group in the town say there is now a strong case to open a new station halfway between Hereford and Abergavenny.

    Parish councillors say a new parkway station could serve up to 500 passengers a day and could carry freight for local businesses.

    They are looking for funding from the UK and Welsh governments to move their bid forward.

    The Stoke City manager Nathan Jones has praised the courage of his goalkeeper Jack Butland, who stepped up to score the winning penalty in the League Cup last night.

    Jones said Butland, who has been linked with a move away, has been "much maligned at the minute because everything he does has been highlighted".

    And Jones added: "He's not having any luck to be fair to him, he's working hard, he's grafting."

    Butland had previously allowed Leeds back into the game after striking a goal-kick against his own defender, allowing on-loan Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah to score, but scored himself from the spot to win the shootout 5-4.

    A man found with a four-foot long blade in Coventry on Monday has been charged with possession of a knife in a public place.

    The man has since been bailed and is due to appear before Coventry magistrates on 16 September, West Midlands Police said.

    An £8.5m Arts Council fund to help Coventry prepare to become the UK City of Culture in 2021 is being divided up by the city council.

    Coventry Cathedral will get £1m to help fund the cost of an extension - the first time it's had one since 1962.

    And £1.5m will be spent to bring the Drapers Hall back in to regular use as a centre for music performance and music education.

    Another £750,000 will be given to create production spaces for the UK City of Culture at The Daimler Powerhouse building, while the Belgrade Theatre (pictured above) will be given £2.75m to help pay for the refurbishment of the main auditorium.

    Other beneficiaries include the Herbert Art Gallery, which will get £1m for building improvements, and St Mary’s Guildhall, which will receive £1.51m to help improve the "visitor experience".

    A petition opposing the demolition of a flyover in Birmingham, which has been signed by 13,000 people, will be debated by the city council next month.

    The Labour-led administration says it's essential to have a new road layout of the A34 in Perry Barr ahead of redevelopment for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

    But protesters say traffic in the area will be made worse and residents are not being properly consulted.

    The council's business management committee, external decided not to dismiss the petition but allow councillors to debate it.

  12. Gas leak at Cadbury site 'fixed by tomorrow'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 28 August 2019

    The gas leak this afternoon is at the Cadbury offices in Bournville, the firm's confirmed.

    Cadbury owners Mondelez International said a gas pipe was damaged during building work this afternoon.

    The fire service was called and said about 800 people were evacuated as a precaution.

    They confirmed the leak was not at the Cadbury World attraction and Mondelez expected it to be fixed by tomorrow.

    A mother who has filled her house with second-hand school uniforms to give to struggling families in Birmingham admits she almost can't move in her home for clothes.

    Kristina Murphy started the Rubery Schools Community Swap Shop, external in November as she didn't want children going to school with the wrong outfit.

    She started collecting the clothes from lost property boxes at nearly 30 schools in the city and says she's delivered 300 uniforms so far.

    However, she's been so overwhelmed with the response as people in the community now donate too, she's struggling for storage and admits there are bags everywhere.

    The fire service's said 800 people have been evacuated as a precaution, external from the site of a major gas leak in Bournville, Birmingham.

    They're currently on Bournville Lane along with gas engineers after they earlier said workmen had damaged a gas pipe.

    A tweet from a fire service account earlier said it was at the Cadbury site, but it is believed to be near the site.
