    A Stoke-on-Trent church which helps vulnerable people in its community has been given funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

    St Mark's in Shelton needs urgent repairs and the money will be used to draw up plans to apply for a full heritage fund grant of over £1.2m.

    Hanley team rector, Rev Phillip Jones who is overseeing the project said the funding would allow the church to make the building available to the wider community.

    A school's going to hold a fundraising day for a five-year-old pupil whose cancer returned following a stem cell transplant.

    Oscar Saxelby-Lee, from Worcester, had the operation in May but tests have shown cancer present in his cells.

    His family aims to raise £500,000 for further treatment, which they said was not available to him on the NHS.

    Pitmaston Primary is now planning an Oscar Day next month to raise funds and wants other schools, along with firms, to get involved.

    A 40-year-old train has become the centrepiece of a cutting-edge railway research project, pioneered by the University of Birmingham.

    The recently-retired high-speed model is being used to find new ways of modernising the railway, including moves to do away with diesel-powered engines.

    Alex Burrows from the university said the train would allow research to be carried out in a "real-life test environment".

    He said the research would primarily be around the decarbonisation of the railway system such as hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology.

    "Our research is world-leading," he added. "We are one of the largest specialist railway research and innovation centres, and what we're doing is going to shape the railways of the future."

    The family of a driver killed in a crash in Walsall on Monday say he will "always be in our hearts".

    It's believed 19-year-old Liam Ryan lost control of his car before hitting a wall on Essington Road, Willenhall, at 04:15, police said.

    He suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

    A family statement said: “We are all shocked at the sudden loss of a son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and loving boyfriend."

    Keele University's been given planning permission for the solar farm and two wind turbines, external by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

    The authority said the benefit of the scheme, which would provide power for halls of residence and teaching facilities, outweighed the harm to the green belt. , external

    The university hasn't said when work will start on installing the 26,000 solar panels, but says it's part of its plan to be carbon neutral by 2030.
